HSV defeat in the derby: shit! – Player and coach on the ground!

A harsh wind will blow in Hamburg after the 0-1 defeat in the city derby against FC St. Pauli. The mood that arose after the Bundesliga opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0) has now quickly disappeared. Head coach Merlin Polzin and his boys have to deal with the harsh reality. Adam Dźwigała gave St. Pauli the lead in the 19th minute, and the first goal conceded clearly took away HSV's momentum. Captain Yussuf Poulsen described the situation as “simply shit” and criticized the origin of the first goal. New signing Nicolai Remberg spoke of a “stupid set-piece goal” and expressed his displeasure at the yellow-red card for Giorgi Gocholeishvili, which dashed hopes of a turnaround in the 77th minute.

The final phase of the game was goalless for HSV. Only two shots on goal by St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj in 90 minutes speak volumes about Hamburg's offensive harmlessness. Remberg summed it up aptly: “We played well in the first half, but deserved to lose in the end.”

Five points from the first three games

In the following game against Jahn Regensburg, Hamburg showed an exciting performance that led to a 1-1 draw. HSV was down 0-1 until the 83rd minute after Adamyan scored the opening goal for Regensburg in the 6th minute. The young player, who made a big surprise in the league after his return from 1. FC Köln, scored again against HSV.

Although HSV dominated the first half with 9:3 shots and a whopping 63.5 percent ball possession, they failed to create dangerous chances. A penalty from Selke in the 54th minute was parried by Regensburg keeper Gebhart. It was another setback for Hamburg, who had to accept a yellow-red card for Sahiti in the 76th minute. Finally, Selke was awarded a second penalty in the 83rd minute, which he converted to make it 1-1. This goal was his 14th goal of the season - but HSV remains in the bottom of the table.

The traditional club under pressure

Hamburger SV is one of the most traditional and historically important clubs in Germany. Until their relegation in 2018, they were the only team that played continuously in the Bundesliga. With 55 years in the top flight - from 1963 to 2018 - HSV enjoyed a golden era in the late 70s and early 80s in which they won three Bundesliga titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Players like Uwe Seeler, who is the club's record goalscorer with 137 goals, and Manfred Kaltz, who made 581 appearances, shaped the club's success story.

There have been numerous recent changes in management and team composition, but returning to the top of the table remains an uphill battle. The fans are hoping for improvement and that their team will turn things around so that they don't get caught up in the relegation battle again. At a time when the hope of doing a good deal remains high, HSV must show that they can handle the pressure.
