Memmingen Airport is booming: 14.7% more passengers in 2025!

Bavarian airports will appear in a positive light in 2025: strong growth in passenger numbers was recorded at the terminals. Especially that one Memmingen Airport is attracting attention here with an increase of 14.7 percent - faster than the larger airports in Munich and Nuremberg. In the first half of the year, the total number of passengers at Bavarian airports rose by 4.9 percent.

Bavaria's largest airport, Munich, recorded an increase of 3.6 percent in the same period, which corresponds to around 19.8 million travelers. To clarify the return of air travel: After the Corona crisis, passenger numbers are increasing, but this is happening more slowly in Germany than in other European countries. It is currently 12 percent below the 2019 value, while an increase of 12 percent can be observed in Spain Statista reported.

Details on aviation development in Bavaria

A closer look at the numbers shows that almost 186,000 take-offs and landings were carried out at Bavarian airports in the first half of 2025 - a nice increase of 4.9 percent compared to the previous year. The Statistics Bavaria reports that freight volumes even grew by 7.5 percent to over 162,000 tons. This includes not only passenger flights, but also cargo and mail transport.

The different airports have experienced different developments: Nuremberg Airport recorded a 10.3 percent increase in passenger numbers, which means over 1.9 million passengers. In contrast, the number of takeoffs and landings in Nuremberg increased by 8.9 percent.

Memmingen Airport sets a record

Memmingen Airport, which began operations on the site of a former military air base, impressively shows how airport use can develop. With almost 1.7 million passengers in 2025 and a special focus on cheap flights and travel options, the location stands out from the rest. This is also reflected in the 16.8 percent increase in takeoffs and landings.

In general, aviation appears to be experiencing a boom again in the summer of 2025, even if high-tech tickets and thus rising prices are slowing the recovery in Germany. The forecasts suggest that passenger numbers are expected to exceed 2019 levels by the end of 2025, whichever way the wind blows. The Mercury summarizes that although the upswing at Bavarian airports is encouraging, the competition in international air traffic is not sleeping.
