Tragedy in the allotment garden: Two dead in carbon monoxide accident in Munich!
A tragic incident occurred last weekend in an allotment garden in the north of Munich, which shocked the city community. At a private celebration at Lake Fasanerie on Saturday and Sunday, emergency services had to announce devastating news: two men died, a 41-year-old in hospital on Saturday, and a 50-year-old died from his injuries on Sunday. This painful event caused a wave of grief among the relatives and friends of those affected. This is reported by the South German newspaper.
A total of seven men were present at the celebration, four of whom were between the ages of 26 and 58 and sustained minor injuries. Three of these men required hospitalization due to their health conditions. The incident is particularly tragic as it occurred during a celebratory occasion celebrated in a garden shed. Investigations to date indicate that the death was caused by toxic carbon monoxide (CO) emitted from a generator in the basement of the hut.
The dangerous invisibility of carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of organic material. High CO concentrations can lead to serious health problems in a very short time. Symptoms suggestive of poisoning include nausea, shortness of breath, headache and confusion. Ultimately, poisoning can lead to heart failure or even death. Most people are often unaware of these health risks, which leads to tragic accidents like this one. Loud ZDF Over 3,000 hospital stays in Germany each year are due to such poisoning, while around 500 people die from it every year.
The fire department was alerted shortly after 6 p.m. when a 41-year-old man was found unconscious. Unfortunately, the rescue workers were only able to resuscitate two men on site. The responsible authorities immediately launched an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. It has already been found that carbon monoxide levels in the smelter were significantly elevated, indicating the catastrophic effects of the generator. The daily news reports that the police no longer see any danger to the public as only those attending the celebration were affected.
Prevention for the future
This tragic incident also raises questions about hazard prevention. Carbon monoxide can leak from poorly maintained or incorrectly operated equipment, and because of the variety of potential hazards, it is essential to take safety precautions. Installing CO detectors in enclosed spaces can help prevent such accidents. Defective equipment, inadequate ventilation and lack of maintenance are common causes of CO poisoning, as the ZDF website explains.
With the initial investigations and awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide, experts hope that action and education can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
