Drone alarm in Bavaria: Söder calls for immediate defensive measures!

Things are boiling in Munich: a man who was convicted of serious crimes in the city 20 years ago returns and is once again linked to a homicide. Loud Picture The return of the condemned man caused uncertainty among the residents. The person known as the “Munich Killer” was not only a shocking figure in local crime history, but also raised questions about security and law enforcement. It seems that the city is struggling with an old problem that is now seen in a new light.

The people of Munich have been taking on the challenge of reducing the crime rate in the city for some time now. The police have their hands full dealing with the diverse threats. Drone incidents have also been in the news lately. That is why there are efforts to strengthen drone defense in Bavaria and Germany. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is calling for more powers for the Bundeswehr to combat drones, which can pose a threat in crisis situations. These measures were particularly discussed in light of past incidents involving critical infrastructure and even military installations.

Drone defense in focus

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder has also announced that he will introduce a Bavarian drone defense law. This is intended to give the police permission to directly shoot down drones that pose a danger. Söder emphasizes the need to develop the regulations in close cooperation with the federal government in order to create uniform standards. However, Thomas Röwekamp, the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, warns against individual measures by the federal states, as nationwide coordination is essential.

The discussion about the use of drones is taking place against the background of alarming statistics: in just three months, the Federal Criminal Police Office registered over 500 suspected cases of drone flights over sensitive facilities in Germany, including military sites and airports. This situation requires not only quick action, but also careful consideration of the appropriate defense mechanisms.

Technologies and possible measures

Defending drones is extremely complex. Innovative systems such as the IDAS-PRO from the Fraunhofer Institute could provide support here. This system uses radar, cameras and even artificial intelligence to detect and assess threats. However, there are technical difficulties: common defense methods such as jamming and spoofing are expensive and can currently only be used to a limited extent. The Bundeswehr could possibly use fighter jets or Patriot systems to combat drones, but these are ineffective when it comes to small, unmanned missiles.

The inaction in politics and the delays in the implementation of legal initiatives were criticized by experts such as Johannes Rundfeldt from “AG Kritis”, who considers cooperation with Ukraine to be necessary in order to improve its own defenses. “There’s something going on,” you might say – given the large number of authorities involved, it’s no wonder that the ability to react often doesn’t do justice to the situation.

Given the recurring threats from crime and unmanned aircraft, it remains to be seen how Munich will respond to these challenges. The current situation surrounding the “Killer of Munich” could give the city the necessary impetus to take action not only with regard to the security situation, but also with regard to drone defense.
