Commuter alert: S-Bahn chaos in Munich due to construction work!
The journey to work could be a real test of patience for many commuters in the coming weeks. The reason is massive construction work that will significantly worsen the traffic situation. From June 7th, Deutsche Bahn will put a new electronic signal box into operation at Munich's Ostbahnhof, which will lead to significant restrictions on S-Bahn traffic. These measures are necessary to bring the infrastructure up to date and improve public transport connectivity, but it will initially be anything but relaxing for passengers.
The work will start on the night of June 7th and will lead to the complete closure of the main line between Ostbahnhof and Isartor as well as the adjacent S-Bahn tracks. This means for travelers on the route from Pasing to Riem, Giesing, Trudering and Johanneskirchen: They have to change to buses that run every ten minutes. Anyone who wants to go to the airport must also expect delays; Here buses are scheduled every five minutes between Isartor and Ostbahnhof.
Restrictions until June 19th
From June 7th to 13th there will be severely limited operations on the S-Bahn routes around Ostbahnhof. The affected sections are the Ostbahnhof to the Isartor, Giesing as well as Trudering and Johanneskirchen. The operation of the new signal box will also be monitored from June 13th to 18th, which will maintain the restrictions on S-Bahn traffic. Everything should be back to normal on June 19th.
Not only the S-Bahn, but also the Munich subway will be affected. Renovation work is underway between the Giesing and Karl-Preis-Platz subway stations, which will lead to restrictions on the weekends between June 6th and July 6th as well as August 22nd and September 14th. Here, passengers can expect single-track operation and longer waiting times.
Construction site accident at Ostbahnhof
Adding to these already challenging circumstances was a recent incident at a construction site at Munich Ostbahnhof. A component weighing several tons tipped over because the supports gave way. Fortunately, there were no injuries because the construction workers reacted in time to the impending danger signal of a crunching noise and got to safety. Nevertheless, Balanstrasse was completely closed due to the incident, which will lead to further traffic restrictions that could last for several days.
The transport providers ask all passengers to pay particular attention to local public transport in the next few weeks. For information on timetable changes and diversions, the MVV and Deutsche Bahn websites are valuable contact points. It is also recommended to consider alternative routes, for example to avoid the hustle and bustle during the UEFA Nations League Final on June 8th.
