Bavaria starts the AI revolution: TUM and TSMC build development center!
A new milestone for the Bavarian technology landscape: Today, September 1, 2025, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) announced the opening of a research and development center for artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Under the name “Munich Advanced-Technology Center for High-Tech AI Chips” (MACHT-AI), we work in close cooperation with the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC, the world's leading company in the chip industry. This is a strategic step because Europe has an enormous amount of catching up to do in the development of computer chips for AI compared to the USA and Asia, as br.de reports.
MACHT-AI has set itself the goal of connecting excellent science with top international companies. “It is important that we train Bavarian talent in modern chip technologies,” explained Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) and underlined the initiative as a contribution to promoting the region’s innovative strength and competitiveness.
Promoting and developing skills
The Free State of Bavaria is characterized by generous funding of almost 4.5 million euros. Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) sees this as a necessary step to close the talent gap in Europe. The development of such training courses is essential so that Germany does not fall behind in international competition.
“We have a good hand when it comes to innovative technologies,” added Aiwanger. Courses to train the next generation of AI experts are also starting in the new school year at four technical schools in Bavaria. This initiative shows that the Bavarian government takes the relevance of AI seriously as a key technology and is actively working to train appropriate specialists.
TSMC on the rise
TSMC is not only an important partner in this project, but also benefits enormously from the current AI booster. The Taiwanese chipmaker reported net profit of over 60% year-on-year in the second quarter, equivalent to about 398 billion Taiwan dollars (around 11.7 billion euros). Revenues grew by almost 39% to almost 934 billion Taiwan dollars (27.4 billion euros). TSMC exceeds all analyst expectations. The chip developers Nvidia and AMD can hardly meet the increasing demand, which means strong growth for TSMC, as spiegel.de reports.
The world's data centers are also growing rapidly to meet the increasing demand for computer processing power. For the current third quarter, TSMC expects sales of 27.4 to 28.5 billion euros, and this value is also above analysts' expectations, as the news agency tagesspiegel.de reports.
The new center in Munich not only creates new opportunities for training talent, but also lays the foundation for groundbreaking developments in the field of artificial intelligence. In this area, “the money is on the street” – now it is important to develop the ideas and innovations that will advance Bavaria and Germany in global competition.
