Munich's S-Bahn stations: Seven stations are becoming a modern future!

Deutsche Bahn has big plans for the S-Bahn stations in the Munich area. This year there are seven stations on the list, which are to be converted into modern future stations. With an investment of around seven million euros, which is provided by both Deutsche Bahn and the federal government, around 34,000 passengers benefit from the upcoming improvements every day. The measures include both optical beautification as well as a significant improvement in comfort and orientation for travelers. Augsburger Allgemeine reports that the stations of Lochhausen, Gilching-Argelsried, Feldkirchen, St.-Martin-Straße and Buchenau will receive a new design concept. In the already modernized train stations Stockdorf and Unterschleißheim you could already get a first impression of the new colors and designs.

The plans include a comprehensive redesign of the underpasses and platforms, new energy-saving LED lighting and an improved information system. The aim of these measures is to increase accessibility for all travelers, which the Deutsche Bahn particularly emphasizes. Esther Heckmann, the head of the regional south of the DB, emphasizes that the modernization of the train stations is an important step to promote the use of the railway and increase the attractiveness of public transport. This is part of a large -scale, nationwide modernization program that is also promoted in other parts of Germany. This year, around 100 train stations are planned for a similar redesign nationwide.

The modernization plans in detail

A closer look at the individual train stations shows which specific improvements are planned:

  • Lochhausen (S3): The station building is modernized here, with new soils and fresh LED lighting. The work begins this month and should be completed by autumn.
  • Gilching-Argelsried (S8): Access to the underpass is redefined and artistically designed. The changes are planned by October 2025.
  • Feldkirchen (S2): modernization in the train station and at the underpass should start in autumn, including an energetic renovation of the station building next year.
  • St.-Martin-Straße (S3/S5): A new color concept with purple tones will provide a friendlier atmosphere. The first work begins in autumn.
  • Buchenau (S4): Here a comprehensive concept is created in cooperation with the city of Fürstenfeldbruck, which should be completed by 2026.
  • Stockdorf (S6): The train station has been shown in new colors since February and with numerous modern amenities, such as free WLAN.
  • Unterschleißheim (S1): Local artists have redesigned the underpass and additional information displays were installed.

These redesign are not only purely cosmetic. In a pilot phase from 2019 to 2021, Deutsche Bahn has already modernized 16 train stations that serve as a successful basis for the concept of future stations. Sustainability Deutsche Bahn shows that innovative travel information systems and improved bicycle infrastructure could significantly increase customer satisfaction.

The current measures represent an important step to upgrade the S-Bahn offers in Munich and to promote the use of public transport sustainably. With the planned modernizations, the train stations should not only become more appealing, but also significantly increase their functional value. So the Munich can look forward to more modern and user -friendly train stations!
