Langwied dog sports club is fighting for existence - 1400 signatures collected!

The Munich-West dog sports club in Langwied is apparently facing an uncertain future. The planned expansion of the recycling center on Mühlangerstrasse could leave the association, which has existed for over 40 years, without a location. The club members have already collected over 1,400 signatures to fight for the preservation of their beloved training ground. These signatures were submitted to the state parliament, but it remains unclear whether this will be enough to avert the threat of homelessness. That reports tz.de.

The Munich waste management company (AWM) plans to use the adjacent property for operational purposes. The club premises, which are currently used for training up to 150 dogs, could be eliminated. Regina Reich, the association's chairwoman, recently reported that despite the support from members, there is great uncertainty. A new location is urgently sought, although some of the municipal department's proposals were rejected as unsuitable - due, among other things, to a lack of infrastructure and insufficient size.

Looking for a new home

The costs for upgrading a new site are likely to be up to 150,000 euros, so moving represents a major challenge for many members. There is a risk that some members could leave if the new location is too far away. The club currently has 26 German Shepherds and 34 other dog breeds. There are also weekly courses for around 90 dogs. The AWM's contractual commitment to continue using the current site until the end of 2026 provides some breathing room, but time is of the essence.

Another dog sports club in the west of Munich suffered similar blows of fate in 2017 when it had to give up its premises. The loss of a familiar training location can leave a huge void in the dog sports community.

Dog sport in Germany

Dog sports are booming in Germany. Sports such as agility, flyball and dog dancing are becoming increasingly popular. According to that VDH These are not only great ways to strengthen the bond between people and dogs, but also excellent ways to promote fitness and obedience. This also includes the tracking dog test, in which dogs can make optimal use of their nose instinct. Many dog sports have specific requirements in order to provide dogs with species-appropriate exercise, which is also taken into account by German animal welfare law, which requires that dogs be provided with appropriate accommodation and exercise ( tierschutz.vdh.de ).

It remains to be hoped that the Munich-West dog sports club will find a solution to continue its tradition and continue to offer a home to the many dog lovers in the region. In any case, the pressure is not decreasing, and the next steps are crucial for the future of the club and the dog sports community in Munich.
