Celebrate diversity: Munich's Marienplatz shines at the CSD!

On June 26, 2025, Munich will shine under the banner of diversity and inclusion at this year's Christopher Street Day (CSD). On Marienplatz, numerous municipal departments and businesses show that they are committed to the rights of the LGBTIQ* community. The city administration is using this opportunity to educate people about the importance of diversity and equal opportunities and is doing good business with participatory activities and advisory services.

Visitors can look forward to a colorful stand of the Human Resources and Organization Department, where the Coordination Office for LGBTIQ* Equality and the QUEER NET LHM network are represented. There are rainbow-colored prizes to be won on the Wheel of Fortune and interested people can ask questions about career paths in city administration. The district administration department is also present and offers information through diversity teams, equal opportunities officers and the municipal field service.

Diversity in focus

The CSD is not just a celebration, but also a platform for education. The health department in particular has interesting information available: an information stand for STI advice is offered, where low-threshold discussions about sexual health are possible, especially on topics such as HIV and sexually transmitted infections. An anonymous and free test offer is also advertised.

A special highlight this year is the Munich City Library, which is represented for the first time at Frauenplatz with its golden book bus. Here they show diversity-sensitive books and offer mobile learning opportunities that encourage encounters. Participatory activities and discussions about the EU and Europe are also planned as part of Europe Direct Munich.

Current research and challenges

In addition to the CSD, various research projects deal with the situation of LGBTIQ* people in public administration. For example, we examine which institutional framework conditions influence the experiences of discrimination of LGBTIQ* employees. This research is important in order to develop targeted intervention options that can help those affected and ensure greater equality. Frankfurt University emphasizes that it is crucial to analyze and address experiences of discrimination.

The results of the study “Out in the Office?!” also show that queer employees are often confronted with prejudice and discrimination. Over 1,500 LGBTIQA* employees were surveyed between May and August 2023 to get a comprehensive picture of their work situation. Diversity Institute has published this survey, which takes place every three years and offers valuable insights into the experiences of queer people in the work environment.

Overall, the CSD in Munich is becoming not only a celebration of diversity, but also an important turning point for discussions about equality and against discrimination. The city shows that the path to greater acceptance and diversity is not just a goal, but an ongoing process that affects everyone.
