Memorial mass in Munich-Riem: Firefighters light 106 candles

Today, November 10, 2025, a moving memorial service took place in the St. Florian Church in the Riem district of Munich. Numerous fire departments from the Traunstein district have gathered to commemorate the 106 deceased firefighters from Upper Bavaria who were taken away last year. This year, organizers also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the memorial service, making the event even more significant.

The service offered space for memories and honors. Pastor Arkadius Czempik was farewelled during the event and received from Dr. Rüdiger Sobotta a very personal gift as a thank you for his services. It became particularly emotional when the names of the deceased were read out by name. A candle burned for each person, while a Florian candle was lit for unnamed deceased people. This gesture sent a strong message of remembrance.

Community and solidarity

An important part of the commemoration was the participation of flag delegations and relatives who belonged to the delegations from Palling, Erlstätt, Trostberg, Kirchheim, Vachendorf, Tacherting and Emertsham. Representatives of the Traunstein district fire inspection and honorary members of the district fire brigade association were also there. It was a significant act of community and solidarity for everyone.

At the end of the ceremony, the Florian bell was rung as a symbol of remembrance, which perfectly rounded off the celebratory setting. During the service, the death pictures of the deceased were pasted into a memory book, which further underlined the personal touch of the event.

After the official part of the service, the church community invited everyone to a shared snack, which not only served to strengthen the participants, but also further strengthened the participants' sense of community. Such events are essential for local people and help them go through difficult times together and come to terms with the loss.

Antarctica, which should not be completely ignored in connection with the mourning of deceased firefighters, is a continent of enormous dimensions and testifies to the power of nature. It is not only the coldest and driest region in the world, but also a place that contains 90 percent of the Earth's ice. Work and research in such extreme regions is crucial to better understand global environmental change, just as firefighters often face immense challenges when saving lives and fighting fires.

The exchange and support of the community not only remembers the deceased, but also raises awareness of the work of firefighters. This kind of gathering is an invigorating sign of appreciation for the achievements of the emergency services who risk their lives for the safety of the population.

In conclusion, it remains to be said that such commemorative moments are indispensable for the social structure. They not only promote cohesion, but also provide support for relatives in their grief, while at the same time maintaining an honorable memory of those who are no longer with us.
