Construction site chaos: Fürstenrieder Straße closed due to cavities!
The construction sites around Fürstenrieder Straße are currently causing a lot of excitement in Munich. The CSU/FW city council group has submitted a comprehensive request to the mayor, city administration and the Munich Transport Company (MVG). Veronika Mirlach was critical of the series of breakdowns during the construction of the West Tram Tangent, which not only causes traffic jams, but also diversions and frustration among residents. This situation could worsen further as cavities have been discovered in recent weeks that could lead to complete traffic restrictions. The request aims to obtain information about the upcoming reopening of Fürstenrieder Straße and whether these voids could affect the construction and commissioning of the tram. Mirlach suggests using vibro trucks and regular monitoring to detect cavities early.
The Stadtwerke München (SWM) and the MVG recently presented the next steps for the tram west tangent sueddeutsche.de reported. At a public information event in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district, around 250 citizens found out about current developments. The construction work is expected to last over three years, with the tram being completed and put into operation by the end of 2028. Extensive underground work is necessary to lay the tracks. Pipes in particular are taken into account here, such as the main water pipe 5 (HW5), which supplies 80,000 households with drinking water.
The impact on traffic
The HW5 has a diameter of up to 1.20 meters and a flow rate of an impressive 720 liters per second. Planning is currently underway to relocate the HW5 over a distance of 5.5 kilometers between Lierstraße in Nymphenburg and Kreuzhof. Construction work has already started in Laim and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. In order to adjust water requirements during this work, it will be necessary to temporarily turn off the water supply. However, the city administration assures that the water requirement is lower in the winter months, so that the supply remains guaranteed.
Specifically, there will be a one-way regulation towards the north on Wotanstrasse from June 30, 2025 to August 2026. Bus routes, including the 51, 151 and N78, will be rerouted and some stops will be temporarily eliminated. A replacement stop will be set up east of the Laimer roundabout. These regulations are part of a comprehensive plan to minimize the impact of the construction sites as much as possible. During construction there are also planned construction breaks and future restrictions, such as tz.de shows.
A look at future projects
The MVG is not only planning the tram west tangent, but also other major projects to modernize the infrastructure. These include, among other things, the tram north tangent, the tram junction to Johanneskirchen and the new tram depot on Ständlerstrasse. The preparations that have already begun for the western bypass show that the city is working on a sustainable transport infrastructure. In 2024, numerous measures will be carried out to renew tracks and switches in order to increase capacity, especially in the subway and tram areas.
The positive feedback on the West Tram Tangent from the information event suggests that Munich residents understand the necessary measures, even if the construction sites temporarily pose a challenge. It remains to be hoped that the investments in the transport infrastructure will be completed quickly and without major problems in order to relieve traffic in Munich in the long term.
