In Munich it is about the future of a small but fine cultural meeting place: The bookcase on Partnachplatz, which has been at this location since 2016, is urgently looking for new members. The “Open Bookcases Sendling-Westpark” association wants to ensure that this public bookcase, one of around forty in the city, continues to be a place for encounters and exchange. With a change to the statutes last year, the association not only opens its doors to active and former members of the district committee, but also invites anyone interested to get involved. “Anyone who enjoys reading and being in the community can use the help,” says board member Günther Sinapius. A small annual contribution would not only help finance repairs, but also support the maintenance of the bookcase.
Joint commitment necessary
The tasks are varied: members of the association take care of the tidying up, remove inappropriate or damaged books from the sale and organize repairs, for example to the mechanism of the sliding door. Sinapius points out that the club's members have gotten older and some have even moved away or died. That's why it's even more important to attract new faces to keep the bookcase afloat.
There are also positive examples of the integration of such facilities into the community in other parts of the city. The public bookcases in Munich give everyone access to books that can be taken out free of charge or returned for reading.
