Uninvited guests: Munich is fighting against overnight stays!

In Munich-Sendling, an unauthorized overnight camp at the intersection of Siegenburgerstrasse and Rüdesheimer Strasse is causing restless nights for residents. Since May 2025, an increasing number of people have been spending the night on the grass verge and in parked vehicles. While residents reported that they were repeatedly disturbed by loud conversations and football games on the street, the situation has noticeably worsened in recent months. Günter Keller, the chairman of the local SPD district committee, receives numerous calls every day from concerned neighbors who feel disturbed by the nighttime activities. The tz reported up to 17 vehicles with Romanian license plates spotted in the area.

Police Inspectorate 41 has received several complaints in recent weeks and has already identified a large number of administrative offenses. Despite regular expulsions, the police are often unable to issue fines because many of those staying overnight do not have a permanent address. The cooperation between the police and the municipal regulatory department (KVR) has meant that reports of special use are now processed more quickly, with the notices being handed out on site by the police.

Clearance of the night camp under discussion

It is still uncertain whether the night camp will actually be evacuated. In this regard, a decision is expected from the wild camping working group at the social department. A resident says that the situation was temporarily calmer recently, which he attributes to rainy weather. But the reason for the nighttime disruptions is part of a larger problem: Although the city of Munich has created a variety of advice and accommodation options for homeless people, many of them continue to sleep in the open air.

Loud official information from the city There are many refuges available, such as emergency shelters, accommodation providers and social-educational offers. There are a variety of support programs that are particularly important during the cold season. However, some people choose not to accept this help. The reasons for this can be the protection of their self-determination or the mistrust of authorities.

Help for homeless people

The Homeless Aid Network Munich is intensively committed to counteracting homelessness and offering those affected new perspectives. Various social agencies work together to offer assistance in the form of community centers, psychosocial support and emergency shelters. It is important that the decision to seek help always lies with the affected individual.

The current situation in Munich-Sendling illustrates how complex the issue of homelessness is. The city has made many efforts to support people in emergencies, but the reality is often different. Close cooperation between authorities, social institutions and residents is essential in order to find solutions and ensure the well-being of everyone.
