Construction site chaos at Wilhelm-Heinichen-Ring: full closure from October 29th!

The city of Munich is facing construction sites that will have a major impact on traffic in the coming months. One of the largest construction sites concerns the Wilhelm-Heinichen-Ring, where the second construction phase will begin on Monday, October 29th. This section stretches between the forest cemetery and the DB bridge, a route that many Munich residents use every day.

As the Celle press reported that the northern lanes will be completely closed during construction work. However, traffic will be routed in one lane in both directions using the temporary southbound lanes. Things are particularly serious for heavy traffic: the construction site area remains closed to them and diversions are already signposted.

Important traffic regulations

The connections to Kortenumstrasse and Welfenallee also have to make way for general traffic. Practical exceptions apply to regular bus services and emergency vehicles that are allowed through in emergencies. The Krähenberg connection is regulated by a construction site traffic light and remains accessible in all directions, as does Marienwerder Allee.

Pedestrians and cyclists must be prepared for restrictions as access is not possible in the construction site area. However, signalized crossings for pedestrians and cyclists will be set up on Welfenallee and Birkenstraße/Am Waldfriedhof. The city asks road users to be understanding and to avoid the construction area as far as possible in order to avoid longer waiting times and traffic jams.

More construction sites in view

But the challenges for Munich's road users don't stop there. Construction of the new Lindwurmstrasse railway overpass will begin in mid-March 2024. These extensive measures are expected to last until August 2028. There are currently significant traffic restrictions on Lindwurmstrasse between Poccistrasse/Ruppertstrasse and Implerstrasse. In addition, since October 20th, the underpass has been completely closed to all types of traffic - including pedestrians and cyclists - until Friday, December 19th, according to information from Munich.de.

A free shuttle bus will be set up between the stops for pedestrians. Cyclists need alternative routes that lead via Bavariastrasse. For vehicle traffic, the city recommends bypass options via Radlkoferstraße, Tumblingerstraße and Thalkirchner Straße, depending on the destination. After a short closure, Tumblingerstrasse has been accessible again since October 20th.

There is certainly no anticipation of the upcoming construction sites, but we can be curious to see how the traffic flows in Munich will adapt to these developments. Stay tuned and plan your routes ahead!
