Water damage and mold: chaos in the Schwabing daycare center causes moves!

In Schwabing, specifically at Feilitzschstraße 6, the concerns about the local daycare center are not entirely new, but they are becoming more and more urgent. The facility has been struggling with recurring water damage for years, which has now forced groups to move again. The city's facilities continually have to deal with health risks that result from inadequate structural conditions.

It was particularly bitter when water damage occurred on September 17th and again on October 10th. The first affected were the children of the so-called “star group”, who had to be relocated due to a pipe leak. Water later seeped into the “Moon Group” room from the fitness center above. The drying work for the first water damage has now been completed; The “Star Group” can most likely return in mid-November. However, things look bleaker for the “Mond Group” – they probably won’t be able to return to their familiar premises until mid-December.

Mold and health concerns

But the water damage is not the only problem plaguing the daycare center. The rooms were also affected by elevated mold levels, largely caused by a leak in the fitness center. Anton, a three-year-old boy, has been having trouble sleeping for weeks and wants nothing more than to go back to his old daycare center. Many children have similar problems, which worries parents. They are dissatisfied with the slow progress in combating the mold and are worried about the health of their children, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

In recent years, the education department has always emphasized that the moisture problems have been taken care of. Regular interventions took place in 2017, 2019 and 2022. After the last water damage in 2023, the pressure to finally find long-term solutions is increasing. The new property manager is working to address the problems, but parents are demanding quicker action.

A call to improve the situation

The Schwabing-Freimann district committee has now sent a written appeal to the city administration to draw attention to the urgent situation. An implementation schedule for the return to the daycare center is still pending, and the feedback from parents is becoming increasingly urgent. The repair of the crèche rooms is now a priority, three out of four relaxation rooms have been repaired, and after the planned infrared dehumidification, a comprehensive cleaning is on the agenda. A negative mold test remains a prerequisite for reopening.

It is therefore all the more important that everyone involved pulls together. Dagmar Föst-Reich from the FDP suggests putting the buildings through their paces during the closing phase during the summer in order to prevent such problems in the future. The city of Munich has rented the space, but it is a responsibility that must be implemented decisively.

The daycare groups have found their new locations for the time being, which is causing confusion among the children who have been divided into larger groups. The hope remains that the daycare centers will soon be able to return to their usual environment and that the well-being of the little ones will improve again, because health should always come first.

The city is now responsible for the many small disputes caused by the lack of construction work. Now it's time to get out your elbows and fight together for the well-being of the little ones so that everyday life in the daycare center can soon run smoothly again.
