New Poccistraße station: revolution for Munich's local transport!

An exciting development is imminent in Munich: the Südring, which is currently mainly used for freight traffic, could soon be reopened for passenger traffic. Deutsche Bahn (DB) plans to shift freight traffic to the Nordring and set up a new regional train stop on Poccistraße. The project has been submitted to the Federal Railway Authority for planning approval since December 2023 Süddeutsche.de reports.

The new regional train stop is primarily intended to improve the connection between the Rosenheim and Mühldorf area and Munich. DB Infrago has already submitted the relevant documents and expects a three-year construction period once the building permit has been obtained. However, the exact timing of implementation is still up in the air. It is uncertain when exactly the financing agreement can be concluded with the Free State of Bavaria. Furthermore, the cost of the new station is estimated at around 60 million euros, although this does not include the investments for access from the north side.

Improvements in local transport

Access to the new regional train stop is currently planned via Fleischerstrasse and another barrier-free access from Lindwurmstrasse. There was particular criticism of the lack of bicycle parking spaces, but the mobility department is already looking for solutions to improve this. The construction of the new double-story subway station in Sendling, which serves the U3 and U6 lines, is also on the agenda. This new subway station will merge the Poccistraße and Implerstraße stations and is part of a larger plan to relieve congestion on the existing subway lines.

The new subway station is characterized by an open design and will be connected to the planned Poccistraße regional train stop. This not only strengthens inner-city local transport, but also creates a future-oriented mobility concept that focuses on local public transport as well as cycling and walking. Another highlight is the U9 project, a planned important subway project that is intended to relieve pressure on the U2, U3 and U6 lines from Sendling to Schwabing. How stadt.muenchen.de As noted, this project not only improves frequency increases and network stability, but is also intended to shorten travel times and enable new route expansions.

Urban development and challenges

But not everything is going according to plan: The development plan for the area between Implerstraße, Kapellenweg and the railway tracks has been approved, but the planned underground car park at Implerstraße 17 could conflict with the subway station construction project. Edeka has already raised objections to the development plan, and whether there will be legal disputes is still unclear.

The coming years promise a lot of movement in Munich's local transport sector. Linking the new subway station with the regional train stop could significantly improve mobility in this part of Munich and send a signal that the city is investing in future-oriented transport infrastructure. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and when the first trains will stop at the new station.
