Autobahn-Holzkirchen celebrates 90 years: a look behind the scenes!

Where do you celebrate your birthday and at the same time provide information about important traffic issues? That's right, in Holzkirchen! The first nationwide “Motorway Day” took place there on October 4, 2025, and the Holzkirchen highway maintenance department opened its doors to all interested parties. On this special day the 90th anniversary of the Meisterei was also celebrated, which made the event a very special event.

Visitors could look forward to an exciting program. In addition to the presentation of modern vehicles, rescue exercises also took place, which impressively showed how important cooperation with the emergency services - including the fire brigade, medical services, technical relief organizations and the motorway police - is. The head of the Holzkirchen office, Benjamin Surner, reported on the history of the motorway and provided interesting insights into the exciting history of its creation, which began in 1934 with the groundbreaking for the Munich-Salzburg motorway in Munich-Ramersdorf.

The fascination of the highway

The Holzkirchen motorway maintenance department, which employs around 40 people, is responsible for a section of the route that extends from Munich's Ramersdorf to the Inntal motorway triangle. Numerous challenges have to be overcome, such as the 7% gradient on Irschenberg or the bridge in Weyarn. But the employees are up to it and manage an impressive workload every day.

A few key data about the motorway maintenance department illustrate the dimensions of their work: There are 9 junctions and 10 parking spaces available on around 800,000 m² of road surface. In total there are 165 traffic signs and 42 traffic control systems to ensure the safety of drivers. It is also worth noting that around 550 tonnes of rubbish are disposed of from the streets every year - from mixed waste to old tires to rubble and household items.

Importance for the region

The event was attended by Michael Kordon, director of the Southern Bavaria branch, and Florian Oßner from the CSU, both of whom emphasized the importance of this infrastructure for the region. Kordon highlighted the importance of maintaining the highway for economic and social development. State Secretary Stefan Schnorr also underlined the relevance of the motorway for the entire state and referred to the financing security until at least 2029.

The music band “Die Autobahn GmbH Südbayern” contributed to the musical entertainment and brightened up the celebrations with their performance. Overall, the day not only provided exciting information, but also a welcome opportunity for citizens to find out about the work and challenges of the Holzkirchen motorway maintenance department and to experience it first hand.

The Federal Motor Transport Authority offers regular insights for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the topic of transport and its developments in Germany. Their statistical handbook “Traffic in Numbers” covers almost all aspects of traffic, which has been used in politics and companies for over 40 years. Information about this is available on the KBA website.
