Chaos on the S-Bahn: Construction site causes chaos in Munich
After almost ten days of construction work, the Munich S-Bahn is largely back in regular service on the main route. As the South German newspaper reported that some connections continued to be canceled, especially at peak times, but the planned work in the Laim area was completed on Monday night. However, a signal disruption, the cause of which is currently being determined, is causing possible delays on the main route. Deutsche Bahn's infrastructure subsidiary, DB Infrago, is already in the process of fixing the problems.
The closure of the western part of the inner city route due to construction work on the second main route caused chaos for days. Overcrowded regional trains caused confusion for many passengers as they sought information about changed routes. Deutsche Bahn received strong criticism from the Pro Bahn Upper Bavaria passenger association, which described last week as a “week full of unreasonable demands” for passengers. The situation was particularly delicate for commuters from the surrounding area, who at times could not find space on the overcrowded regional trains at the main station.
Criticism and demands
The challenges facing commuter traffic were clearly identified by Pro Bahn. There were loud calls for an increased use of regional trains and additional commuter trains. The use of long-distance trains between the main station and Pasing should not be ignored in these tense times. Passengers consider the current replacement bus concept to be completely inadequate, especially in rush hour traffic.
The next construction work will soon begin, which will take place from November 15th to 17th. This weekend only the S6 will run on the city center route, and the first restrictions could begin as early as Friday evening, November 14th, from 10:20 p.m. The question arises as to how many commuters will then find themselves standing in front of closed doors or overcrowded trains. Depending on the route, the remaining S-Bahn lines end at the main station, Heimeranplatz or in Pasing. Replacement buses are in use for the route between Trudering and Ostbahnhof, although a change to the subway is recommended.
Outlook and renewed maintenance work
The track and cable engineering work, which was originally scheduled as normal maintenance work, has developed into a real sticking point. In addition, there are tests for possible World War II duds at the Ostbahnhof, which further exacerbate the problem. The next similar restrictions can be expected for the first and second weekends of Advent. Considering that the S-Bahn is considered a central part of Munich's local transport, the current situation is a serious problem for the city and its travelers.
