Fight for football field: FT gladly announces girls' project threatened!
A tense conflict is brewing in Munich that concerns the popular “Girls at the Ball” project. The FT Gern has surprisingly terminated the rental agreement for the football training for girls that has existed since 2007. This could have far-reaching effects on the young participants, who are welcomed into this free offer from as young as six years old. The Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district committee will discuss this situation at a meeting on November 18, 2025, which could seriously jeopardize the continued existence of the initiative. Hello Munich reports that the initiative now offers lessons at 16 locations in Munich and seven other cities in Germany.
The President of FT Gern, Michael Franke, explains that the lack of space, especially in winter, is a main reason for terminating the cooperation agreement. With up to 30 teams sharing an artificial turf pitch, the training conditions for the girls are becoming increasingly difficult. Franke emphasizes that the decision to end the collaboration was not an extraordinary measure and points to an alternative location at SC Amicitia.
Surprise among the project sponsors
The non-profit educational and cultural society Biku, the sponsor of the project, is surprised at the termination and reports that coexistence has been harmonious so far. Biku still hopes that training for the girls can still take place on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Franke points out that there was already a conversation with Biku in the summer of 2024, but that did not lead to any result.
The project is not only appreciated regionally, but is part of a larger trend in football. With its “Strategy Women in Football FF27”, the German Football Association (DFB) aims to promote female football and bring about structural changes. A central concern is to increase the number of active players, coaches and referees by 25 percent. The strategy also aims to bring more women into positions of responsibility and significantly increase public perception of women's football. The DFB The aim is not only to strengthen competitive sports structures, but also to offer girls and women an attractive range of sports from an early age.
The cultural status of girls in sport
The word “girl” itself has an interesting history. It comes from “magedichīn” in Middle High German and has evolved over time into the term we use today. Girls primarily refers to young women up to the age of 30, who are often colloquially referred to as “girls”. The Wiktionary illustrates how the term occupies a special place not only linguistically but also socially.
The upcoming meeting in the district committee could be of great importance for many girls in the region. On November 18, 2025, it will become clear whether there is a solution to the space problem and whether the popular soccer training for the young athletes can continue to be offered.
