Important construction work: Dachauer Straße closed to pedestrians from January!

Munich's transport infrastructure is facing a comprehensive renovation. From January 7th to March 2nd, 2026, the underpass on Dachauer Straße will be completely closed to cyclists and pedestrians. The reason for this is important work on the groundwater basin and pipe laying, as Wolfgang Kuhn, chairman of the district committee, announced. This closure is necessary in order not to endanger the completion of the extensive construction work that Deutsche Bahn is currently carrying out.

The railway bridge, which was built in 1907, will be completely renovated. This renewal is part of a modern development plan that the city and Deutsche Bahn will implement over the next few years. A comprehensive redesign of the intersection area is scheduled for summer 2026. This measure will not only breathe a breath of fresh air into the infrastructure, but will also increase traffic safety and increase the clearance height for vehicles.

Detours and construction progress

Two diversions will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists during the closure. The western diversion route leads over the underpass at Moosach train station, with cyclists forced to push their bikes. If you prefer to cycle, use the eastern route via the underpass on Liegnitzer Straße, where cycling is permitted.

A spokesman for Deutsche Bahn made it clear that the major work can only be carried out in short, coordinated periods of time. This measure was planned to ensure rapid progress and timely completion {{a href=“https://www.tz.de/muenchen/stadt/hallo-muenchen/mehr-nutzen-muenchner-unterfuehrung-dich-fussgaener-koennen-sie-bald-auch-nicht-94092579.html“}} reports that the planning and implementation are closely linked.

As early as December 2025, Deutsche Bahn was able to move the 1,500-ton core of the new railway bridge into its final position. This impressive technical achievement was achieved using an innovative process: the concrete structure was moved 26 meters on a Teflon-coated track. Wow, that's equivalent to the weight of about 300 African bull elephants!

Future vision for rail transport

The new plans not only include the bridge, but also the improvement of the entire traffic system on Dachauer Straße. This includes separate sidewalks and cycle paths as well as a turning lane that extends under the bridge. The city of Munich and Deutsche Bahn are investing around 13 million euros in the implementation of this comprehensive modernization measure. Part of these funds is co-financed by the European Union {{a href="https://bahnblogstelle.com/221976/bauarbeiter-in-muenchen-neue-eisenbahnbruecke-in-finale-position-bring/"}}.

There will also be numerous other railway expansion projects in Munich in the coming years. Over 50 projects are intended to complement the second main route and further improve mobility in and around Munich. These include, among other things, the planned extension of the S7 to Geretsried and the four-track expansion at Daglfing. All of this is part of the group's “Strong Rail” strategy, within which over 150 bridges nationwide and comprehensive redesigns of the railway infrastructure are being addressed {{a href=“https://www.bahnausbau-muenchen.de/home.html”}}.

The railway aims to make mobility in Munich and the surrounding districts more climate-friendly and safer. Soon the existing infrastructure will not only have a modern look, but will also significantly improve traffic flow. But before such a positive development, there are unavoidable construction sites and diversions that will temporarily require patience from the people of Munich.
