Police intervene in Munich drama: SEK operation and shots fired in apartment!

A new police operation in Munich caused a stir on Wednesday morning - and not without reason. At 6 a.m., officers from the Special Operations Command (SEK) on Max-Bill-Strasse discovered that a dangerous situation had arisen. While searching an apartment, officers fired several warning shots. Luckily there were no injuries like that South German newspaper reported.

According to initial findings, the measure was part of a larger investigation into violent clashes between rival groups that took place on the same street on Tuesday of the previous week. This altercation involved over 30 people and two 19-year-old men suffered serious stab wounds in the brawl, which required hospital treatment.

Investigations and arrests

During the search, a 52-year-old owner of the apartment was temporarily arrested, but was later released. Investigations are now underway against him for attempted grievous bodily harm. Other family members were in the apartment at the time of the operation.

The emergence of this situation could have far-reaching consequences, as investigators from Commissariat 11 of the Munich Criminal Police are investigating a possible connection with an attempted homicide that took place in March 2022 at Korbinianplatz due to a fight between groups of youth. Their perpetrator was sentenced to seven years in prison for murder in October 2023.

In addition, a second apartment was searched during the operation to secure evidence. Another person was temporarily arrested, although this was not directly related to the previous events. However, a police spokesman did not want to confirm or deny information about whether the arrest was related to the homicide in Milbertshofen.

General security situation and police operations

The increase in violent crime is not just a Munich phenomenon. According to a report by the ZDF today A record number of fatal police shootings was reached in Germany in 2024, with a total of 22 cases. The increase in violent crimes means that the police union (GdP) is campaigning for better networking between the authorities in order to be informed about possible dangers and the health status of suspects. GdP federal chairman Jochen Kopelke blames the increasing violence for the increase in fatal firearms operations and calls for the widespread use of Tasers to improve de-escalation during operations.

While the Munich police are working on solving these incidents, the social debate about safety and how to deal with violence in the city remains highly topical. The latest events not only pose challenges for the police, but also raise questions about the safety of the general public.
