U2 subway: weekend closure on Theresienstrasse until the end of November!

Munich subway passengers should prepare for some changes in the coming weeks. From today, October 24, 2025, U2 travelers must expect restrictions on weekends. The Theresienstraße stop will remain closed until the end of November 2025 due to necessary renovation work, which also affects the stop at Königsplatz. The Munich Transport Company (MVG) is carrying out urgent maintenance work on the tunnel walls, so that the U2 will not stop at Theresienstrasse and Königsplatz for a total of six weekends from Friday evening to Monday morning until November 30th. Radio gong reported that this applies to the period between 10:30 p.m. on Friday and the regular closing time on Sunday.

Specifically, this means that the U2 between the main station and Josephsplatz is interrupted. However, passengers can switch to alternative connections. The MVG recommends using tram lines 27 and 28 as well as the U3 to bridge the closed section between Scheidplatz and Sendlinger Tor. This flexibility ensures that the usual route to destinations in the city center remains possible.

Details about the renovation

The current measures are part of MVG's larger efforts that go beyond the renovation of the walls on Theresienstrasse. Based on the information from mvg.de Those responsible see bundling work as an opportunity to use synergies while minimizing restrictions for passengers. Apart from the work in Maxvorstadt, the U8 service will also be affected by a shortened route during this time. Passengers between Sendlinger Tor and the Olympic Center can temporarily switch to the U3.

On the affected weekends, especially on Sunday, November 23rd, the power supply to the Harthof signal box will also be renewed. During this time, the U2 is only in use in the section from Central Station to Messestadt Ost. Replacement buses are available for travelers coming from Feldmoching, so that accessibility to the city center is maintained.

Information for passengers

In order to keep passengers informed about the changes, MVG will launch an intensive information campaign. Notices, ticker texts, announcements and a special information page mvg.de should help ensure that everyone is well informed. The MVG hopes to minimize inconveniences and make the changeover as pleasant as possible for passengers.

The current renovation is part of a comprehensive program to improve Munich's subway infrastructure. Given that parts of the network are up to 50 years old, every measure points the way for the future of local transport in Munich. Studies of past construction work, such as that on the U6, show that such investments not only modernize the infrastructure, but also increase passenger volumes through better services. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported consistently positive feedback from travelers who were satisfied with replacement buses during previous renovation phases.
