New bookstore Fanny reads in Munich celebrates the joy of reading for children!

May 30, 2025 was a very special day for the Munich book scene: the new bookstore “Fanny reads” opened its doors. The small shop at Gabelsbergerstrasse 40, in the immediate vicinity of the TU Munich, the Pinakothek and Königsplatz, is a true paradise for young readers. Owned by the committed book women Angelika Stemp and Melanie Hartmann, the focus is entirely on children's and young adult literature. The joy of reading is very important here!

On 45 square meters, parents and children can choose between board books for the little ones and exciting young adult novels. But that's not all: In addition to a curated range, Stemp and Hartmann also offer comprehensive advice for daycare centers, schools and parents. “We want to create a space for encounters in which the enthusiasm for reading learns to fly,” say the operators. The bookstore is named after Franziska “Fanny” Gabelsberger, who became famous for selling books after her husband’s death.

An experience for the little ones

At the ceremonial opening there was already an exciting children's book event with the author Silke Schlichtmann. “We have big plans for regular events,” emphasize Stemp and Hartmann. The first contact with daycare centers and schools has already been made, and the popular reading bags for school beginners are also in preparation. With the support of eBuch, an association group, “Fanny reads” is on solid footing and is well on its way to becoming a popular meeting place for young readers and their families.

The importance of children's books cannot be overstated. According to current statistics, children's books account for around a fifth of total sales in the German book trade. These are mostly picture books and titles for up to 11 year olds, which make up more than half of the sales figures. Popular book series such as the Harry Potter series or “The School of Magical Animals” are very popular with kids. This shows how important it is to promote a love of literature in the youngest children at an early age.

Diversity in Munich

The opening of “Fanny reads” expands the already diverse range of children’s bookstores in Munich. In a list of eleven recommended addresses, “Fanny reads” is a fresh and welcome addition. These include well-known names such as the Kuckuck children's bookstore, which is considered the only purely children's bookstore in the city, and Buch & Bohne, a successful combination of bookstore and café. The Horne bookstore with its “children's room” and book in the Au, which has existed for more than 20 years, also contributes to the diversity of the literary landscape.

“It is important that children have access to good literature,” emphasizes a bookseller. The wealth of offerings and the passion of the operators make Munich's book landscape something very special. Each of these stores aims to create a place where stories come to life and inspire little ones' imaginations.

Whether at “Fanny reads” or one of the other bookstores, the love of reading and the variety of stories are the key to igniting young minds. This makes the bookstore, which recently opened, a valuable part of our city. We can only hope that many children discover this new meeting place soon!
