Tram West Tangente: Large construction sites and new diversions in Munich!
What is happening on Fürstenrieder Straße? A whole lot! This Monday, June 27, 2025, track construction work began on the exciting tram west tangent project. The construction sites extend along Fürstenrieder Straße from the Laimer roundabout to Kreuzhof. Not only the trams, but also some diversions for car and bus traffic can be expected here. From next week there will be a one-way regulation on Wotanstrasse in the northerly direction - for a total of over a year. Cars and buses will be redirected via the Friedenheimer Bridge.
MVG boss Ingo Wortmann is optimistic and emphasizes that the tram west tangent in Laim is taking shape. The first trams will be running on Fürstenrieder Straße from the end of this year. The first section between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße will then be put into operation. Alex Indra, head of major projects at Stadtwerke München (SWM), proudly reports that the tracks have already been partially laid. Concreting of the tracks will start shortly.
Conversions and relocations
To ensure that the whole thing runs smoothly, the main water pipe 5 between Herthastraße and Hirschgartenallee will also be modernized. But that's not all! The plans for planning approval section 2 along Boschetsrieder Straße are now publicly available. They were changed to take wider trams and the expansion standards of the Radentscheid into account. This shows how important flexibility and adjustments are for a smooth process.
In the future, the new tram line will connect five city districts: Nymphenburg, Laim, Sendling, Hadern and later Obersendling. It largely follows the line that was active as a trolleybus line until 1966. The new route is strongly influenced by the current needs of local transport and creates connections between several subway lines and the Laim S-Bahn stop. Bus routes 51, 151 and N78 will also continue to be in use during construction work to maintain traffic.
A look into the future
The planning is ambitious: the total length of the new route is around 8.25 kilometers and includes 17 stops. The first section between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025, while the remaining sections are scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2028. A large circle of public transport closes here, which also connects the neighboring residential areas to the urban local transport network.
But that's not all, because dismantling of the tram tunnel under the Boschetsrieder Straße/Drygalski-Allee intersection will begin on July 8, 2025. The work on this strategically important point is essential for the continuation of the plan concept. And of course the fixed traffic lights at Romanplatz have been in operation since April - a small step for traffic safety.
While the construction work progresses, the MVG remains transparent about its plans. There will soon be information events on the project and construction process, which are scheduled to take place between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. Let's stay tuned to see what positive changes the tram west tangent will bring, because local public transport in Munich needs a breath of fresh air!
