Criticism and protest: Anti-racist demo in Munich causes unrest!
Today, October 31, 2025, there is a lot of activity in Munich surrounding an upcoming anti-racist demonstration. The mobilization attracts various social actors, including antifa groups, trade unions and numerous anti-racism initiatives as well as NGOs. The integration of the Munich branch of Palestine Spricht, or PSMUC for short, is the focus of the discussion. This group will not only provide speeches, but also moderate the event. Some actors from Barrio Olga Benario are pleased with the realignment and inclusion of PSMUC in the Munich protest environment.
However, there are also critical voices. Opponents of PSMUC's inclusion express concerns about possible anti-Semitic tendencies within the group. The AKM never tires of praising PSMUC as “stable comrades” and vehemently contradicting a statement from the Munich Information Center for Right-Wing Extremism (FIRM), which confronts PSMUC with accusations of anti-Semitism and Islamist ideology. The debate about the content becomes even more explosive when you consider that on October 7th PSMUC presented a banner with the inscription “Against the instrumentalization of anti-Semitism”.
From planning to criticism
The demonstration was originally scheduled for Marienplatz under the motto "Stop The Genocide. Free Palestine", but was then moved to Rindermarkt, just 100 meters from the synagogue, due to other occupancy. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Israelite Community, expressed great outrage at the time and place of this rally. She also fears that some Jewish citizens will not show up for Shabbat prayers for fear of attacks, a concern that is not unfounded under the current circumstances, considering the past attacks on the synagogue and Jewish people in Munich.
The planned route of the demonstration takes participants through the Rosental to the Gärtnerplatzviertel and back to Rindermarkt, passing near a former synagogue. Although the KVR has announced that there are no security concerns and there is no visual contact between the congregation and the synagogue, the Munich police have nevertheless announced possible measures for safe access.
Solidarity and human chain
There is resistance in civil society to the feared clash. Groups have therefore planned to form a human chain on Jakobsplatz from 6:30 p.m. to protect the synagogue and its visitors. Knobloch has already announced that he will speak to the participants of this human chain and reiterate his support for the Jewish community. As of our request, the Palestine Speaks group had not yet responded to questions about the demonstration. The ongoing tensions illustrate once again how important it is to rely on mutual respect in a diverse and sensitive context.
