Dramatic brawl in Bogenhausen: cyclists attacked by young people
Munich has been marked by a disturbing trend in youth crime in recent days, as shown by an incident in Bogenhausen on July 15, 2025. There was a physical altercation between a 59-year-old cyclist and a group of four young people between the ages of 12 and 15. The argument, which was initially only verbal, quickly escalated. The young people brought the cyclist to the ground and injured him with punches and kicks, particularly in the head. The man had to be taken to the hospital, while the young people suffered some minor injuries, as tz.de reports.
In the course of the incident, several police patrols were alerted. A short time later, the young people were taken to the police station and handed over to their legal guardians. Commissariat 23 has started an investigation into mutual bodily harm. It is shocking that such incidents are increasing in the city.
More incidents involving young people
A similar incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at Ostbahnhof, where two teenagers aged 15 and 16 attacked several fellow passengers on the S-Bahn. The two provoked arguments, going so far as to insult, spit and hit others. After getting off at Ostbahnhof, they threatened a 36-year-old man for no reason. The police arrested the two, but there were further attacks on the officers in the police building, and the 15-year-old attacked the police officers with kicks. The young people had to leave the station under security conditions and the 15-year-old was admitted to a psychiatric facility. A police officer suffered minor injuries in the incident but remained fit for duty, according to sueddeutsche.de.
These incidents highlight the current situation of juvenile crime in Germany. According to Statista, juvenile crime cases have reached an all-time high. In 2024, around 13,800 cases were recorded, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. Interestingly, there is a decline in the number of young suspects for all crimes of around 6% in 2024, while violence among young people between the ages of 14 and 17 remains high. What is particularly worrying is that almost three quarters of the young suspects are male, as Statista reports.
Discussion about future measures
In view of the increasing youth violence, several measures are being discussed in society. While some are calling for tougher sanctions in the juvenile justice system, others are calling for a greater focus on prevention in order to prevent criminal lives from becoming a reality. Potential perpetrators should be reached at an early stage, particularly through child and youth welfare services, before acts of violence occur.
The events in Munich are a clear sign that there is a need for action when dealing with young perpetrators. The dispute between a cyclist and a group of young people and the attacks at Ostbahnhof show that these are not just isolated cases, but a larger problem that affects safety in our city. The development of juvenile crime must be monitored and treated more closely.
