19-year-old falls from a crane in Munich: drama on the construction site!
On the night of Friday, June 13th, a serious accident occurred at a construction site in the Bogenhausen district of Munich. A 19-year-old woman fell from a construction crane and landed on a flat roof. This tragic event not only raises concerns about safety on construction sites, but also raises questions about access to such dangerous areas. How did this come about?
Reports from rosenheim24.de According to the report, the young woman and a 23-year-old man had unauthorized access to the fenced-in construction site. At 2:10 a.m. they were climbing onto the crane when the 19-year-old slipped at the level of the branch and fell about 15 meters.
The 23-year-old immediately called the emergency number. The fire brigade and police arrived and the search for the injured person proved challenging as the area was characterized by thickets and obstacles. Ultimately, the fire department was able to find the woman and she received immediate medical attention. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries and the operation lasted a total of around an hour.
Focus on safety on construction sites
A tragic incident like this should be a wake-up call for everyone when it comes to safety on construction sites. According to the German craft newspaper The accident frequency on construction sites is about twice as high as at other workplaces. Accidents there often have more serious consequences.
Risks caused by constant changes in the working environment, physical stress and unpredictable weather conditions are particularly common. The pressure to meet deadlines further contributes to a risky work environment. The legal regulations on occupational safety, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Construction Site Ordinance, are intended to counteract this; they define basic obligations, safety standards and risk assessment.
Pschischoses in construction and the consequences
But it's not just current security standards that are relevant - there are also relevant historical incidents that should raise awareness of security precautions. On September 14, 2024, a crane accident occurred at the same construction site in Bogenhausen, in which the boom of a 42-meter-high crane fell into a residential building. The property damage amounted to around 1 million euros, but fortunately there was no risk of injury (cf. tz.de ).
During the investigation following this incident, it was discovered that the crane's base plate was not installed properly and a structural engineer was not called in to inspect it. Further heavy rainfall, which would have filled a one meter deep pit, led to the crane becoming unstable. Such conditions and poor supervision are not only the cause of accidents, but also show that more attention needs to be paid to safety on construction sites.
In view of these fatal events, it is time for building owners and companies to live up to their responsibilities in safety coordination and occupational health measures. The emphasis is on everyone working together to ensure a safe work environment. After all, no one should have to risk their own life just to get a glimpse of the heights.
