Bernhard Paul: Roncalli celebrates with a fresh program and nostalgia!

The anticipation for the new circus adventure is great: Roncalli will be performing again in Munich's Werksviertel from October 24th to December 7th. Bernhard Paul, the creative mind behind the nostalgic circus, presented the new show “ArtistArt” at a press conference. “I love the historical circus,” emphasized the Austrian, who wants to distance himself from modern trends such as German rap. “The basis of Roncalli was an old circus caravan and memories of my childhood,” said Paul, recording his declaration of love for circus art.

The season promised something special: Paul, who has worked tirelessly to ensure the company's success since Roncalli was founded in 1975, is back with the new program full of homages to artists such as Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring and Salvador Dalí. Contributors include the white clown Gensi, the French duo Cardio and Professor Wacko. Lili Paul-Roncalli, the ringmaster's daughter and former Let's Dance winner, will also be there this season. Particular excitement is caused by bending artist Andrey Romanowski, who wants to find a hand-painted gift from Keith Haring.

A success story

The differences to other modern circuses are clear: Paul has managed to ban animals and plastic from the circus in recent years. “I never suffer from boredom, but rather from an addiction to perfection,” he said. This philosophy has already inspired Roncalli in many countries, including Moscow and New York, where a guest performance attracted 100,000 spectators. Celebrities such as Robert De Niro and Scarlett Johansson were among the guests at the time.

A big milestone is coming next year: Roncalli will celebrate its 50th anniversary. A very special innovation is planned for this anniversary: a new circus tent that resembles an Art Nouveau pavilion and is attached without heavy metal anchors. Paul sees this not just as a technical innovation, but as part of his vision to lead the company into a new era. In this context, he also plans to pass the company on to his children.

A look into history

The history of Roncalli is marked by highlights such as its 30th anniversary, which was celebrated with gala performances in Cologne in 2006. The company's subsequent years saw numerous creative projects and awards. Paul was appointed “Professor” by the Austrian Federal President in 2007, and many of his shows became known beyond the country’s borders.

Bernhard Paul, born on May 20, 1947 in Lilienfeld, came to the circus world with his diverse experiences, including graphic design and art direction, which became his passion. His childhood memories and the idea of a new circus concept made Circus Roncalli what it is today: a place of artistic entertainment.

Paul remains optimistic and full of ideas: “I hope that we can play again on the Schwabing Roncalli meadow in front of the Alte Pinakothek.” A look at the ever-growing history of the circus and the challenges ahead will show all circus lovers that every performance at Roncalli will continue to be a feast for the senses.

Preparations for the festival atmosphere in the Werksviertel are already in full swing. With a colorful program of art, nostalgia and modernity, Roncalli offers an experience that goes far beyond the classic circus.
