Schwabing: Karl-Theodor-Straße is being converted into a cyclist's oasis!

An important step towards traffic safety and environmental protection is imminent: The reconstruction of Karl-Theodor-Straße in Schwabing began on September 22, 2025. Mayor Dominik Krause gave the starting signal for this comprehensive project, which is intended to significantly improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The goal is clear: to increase the quality of stay for all road users and at the same time reduce noise pollution. This reports tz.de.

The renovation covers the section between Brunnerstrasse and Borschtallee. The focus is particularly on school route safety, as there are three schools in the immediate vicinity. To this end, the sidewalks and cycle paths should not only be widened, but new crossing options should also be created. The expansion of the cycle paths to a width of 2.30 meters, including safety separation strips, is a central part of the measures. The Schwabing-West district committee has already welcomed the plans stadt.muenchen.de reported.

Remodeling details and financing

As part of the renovations, the width of the sidewalks will be expanded from currently less than 2.20 meters to at least 2.50 meters, with many sections even becoming over three meters wide. This involves removing one lane in each direction, creating space for new parallel parking spaces. While only 135 of the 191 parking spaces will be retained, the number of bicycle parking spaces is to be increased. The total costs for the project amount to a whopping 9.5 million euros, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport balm.bund.de emphasized.

As part of the renovation, almost 30 new trees can be planted and areas can be unsealed. This not only greens up the street space, but also slightly improves the urban climate. The renovation will be carried out in several construction phases, with expected completion by summer 2027. The bus stops on Ackermannstrasse will also be made barrier-free, which is particularly important for seniors and people with disabilities.

A step into the future

The measures are in line with the federal government's 2030 climate protection program, which aims to increase the attractiveness of cycling. The renovation of Karl-Theodor-Straße sends a clear signal that the city of Munich is not only focusing on safety, but also on environmentally friendly transport solutions. The Urban and Country program supports such initiatives to improve infrastructure for cyclists in both urban and rural areas.

Residents and commuters can therefore look forward to a much safer and more pleasant traffic situation. It is hoped that the conversion will also create an awareness of alternative forms of mobility that not only make our everyday lives easier, but also contribute to climate protection.
