Elevators and escalators in Bavaria: Every second device fails!
In Bavaria there is a massive problem with broken elevators and escalators at train stations. If you take a look at the figures for 2025, it quickly becomes clear that the situation is anything but rosy. According to a report by T Online More than half of all elevators at Bavarian train stations were out of service for at least a day. This has serious consequences, especially for people with mobility restrictions, as they often need help if the technical systems fail. Traffic can often be a real challenge for wheelchair users and families with strollers.
The German railways have currently counted over 380 defective elevators and around 130 escalators at around 1,000 train stations in Bavaria. The high number of long-term failures is particularly worrying: in 42 cases, elevators remained defective for more than a week, and this was also the case 51 times with escalators. A serious operational disruption caused by vandalism or improper use is further fueled by pressing the emergency stop switch. This is not only annoying, but also has a negative impact on the reliability of public transport.
Accessibility in focus
The Bavarian state government plans to further expand accessibility in local public transport in order to guarantee better and, above all, safer use for all passengers. Although the railway makes every effort to repair the defective systems as quickly as possible, the reality is often different: defective elevators and escalators often remain closed for days or even weeks.
Looking at the 130 escalators that were in operation in the Free State last year, it is clear that almost every one of these systems failed at least once. This makes the need for comprehensive technical renewal and better maintenance strategies all the more clear.
It is important that the mobility of all citizens in Bavaria remains guaranteed. A quick response to the outages and sustainable maintenance planning could ensure that people can use public transport again with a better feeling. Let's hope that the announced measures are actually implemented.
