New star children's grave in Memmingen: A place of hope and grief
At the Memmingen Waldfriedhof, a new grave for star children will soon be created. The city of Memmingen has given the approval for this, and soon a place will be created in the new memorial for all those small souls who had to say goodbye to their parents before, during or shortly after birth. A project that not only recognizes the loss, but also wants to offer an oasis of memory and consolation. The Allgäuer Zeitung reports that the total costs for the grave design are around 40,000 euros, which are financed by donation fundraising of the "Sternen Children Memmingen" association.
It should be emphasized that the existing “White Angel” memorial should also be beautified. It was launched about 30 years ago and is also located in the forest cemetery. The draft for the new tomb provides, among other things, steles made of shell limestone and corten steel, lanterns and comfortable benches. Another inspiring detail are the glass balls that are engraved with the names of the deceased children. These are secured in the steles with oak spacers and placed there for one year.
a place of grief and encounter
The concern of the association goes beyond the physical grave. Families can find a variety of offers on the website of the association, including a mourning café called "S traces of heart". Here, adults and children can exchange ideas, use creative offers and get in touch with other mourners. The funeral café offers a protected space in which memories can be found and prospects for the future can develop. The next appointment is scheduled for October 18, 2025.
The loss of an unborn child is a tragic reality that many families presented with challenges a year. An estimated 8,000 to 9,000 women in Germany lose a child after the 12th week of pregnancy. There are also around 3,400 stillbirths from the 24th week. These figures illustrate how important it is to create a space in which grief can be recognized. According to the mourning researcher Kerstin Lammer, funeral celebrations and memorials are essential for the processing and dealing with this loss. Memory treasures such as photos, hand and footprints or special souvenirs play a central role.
community and support
All of these measures are carried out by the conviction that support is indispensable in difficult times. Friends and relatives are often overwhelmed at such moments and do not know how they can help. The association "Sternen Children Memmingen" as well as the participants such as Donum Vitae and the Memmingen children's clinic are CSV partners who offer help and accompany families through their difficult time. It is important to speak openly about the loss and express condolences, as Kerstin Lammer recommends.
A new grave and a committed network not only offer comfort, but also new perspectives for mourners. Further information is available on the website of the association at any time.
