New arrival center at Heimeranplatz: Munich's role for refugees

A new arrival center for refugees is currently being set up in Munich at Heimeranplatz, which is scheduled to open its doors on Monday, August 11, 2025. The former Sheraton Hotel will become the first point of contact for asylum seekers, where they will be registered, medically examined and then referred to other accommodation in Upper Bavaria. The expected length of stay for refugees is around six weeks, but can vary depending on who arrives. At the beginning we expect 200 to 300 people. A total of 900 spaces are planned, with a maximum of 720 people being allowed to be accommodated at the same time, reports tz.

The new center replaces the previous facility in the Euro Industrial Park that was closed due to technical deficiencies. In order not to put additional strain on residents, especially with regard to schools and kindergartens, Diakonie will take over social care. This organization has already gained experience in accommodating refugees between 2022 and 2024. The district committee has already criticized the communication in advance. Residents had some unanswered questions, so an open day is being planned in September to make the information transparent. Flyers should also reach neighbors about one to two weeks before the opening.

Registration and medical examinations

The arrival center will be part of the Upper Bavaria initial reception center. Here the asylum seekers are processed for identification purposes and receive proof of arrival and a residence permit that is valid until the asylum procedure has been completed. The distribution of asylum seekers is carried out in accordance with the specifications of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) based on the country of origin. Families with underage children should be placed in follow-up accommodation within a maximum of six months, while asylum seekers traveling alone are usually moved on after 18 months.

According to the information provided by the asylum seekers, the basic needs of asylum seekers are met Munich city covered by the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG). Health care, including acute illnesses and preventative measures, is also provided, with special support for expectant mothers and women who have recently given birth.

Outlook and challenges

So far there have been concerns in the area about the announced facility. Residents fear that a high number of refugees could lead to additional burdens. It is therefore suggested that information about processes and facilities be shared transparently in order to counteract fears. An informed neighborhood dialogue could help to promote integration and create a positive climate.

The construction of the arrival center is an important step for Munich to be able to meet the demands of current migration. The city is sending an example of humanity and support. The coming weeks will show how the opening goes and whether the residents' fears come true in practice.
