New arrival center on Heimeranplatz: Munich's role for refugees

In Munich, a new arrival center for refugees is currently being set up at Heimeranplatz, which is scheduled to open its gates on Monday, August 11, 2025. The former Sheraton Hotel will be the first point of contact for asylum seekers, where it is registered, medically examined and then passed on to other accommodations in Upper Bavaria. The expected length of stay of the refugees is about six weeks, but can vary depending on the arriving. At the beginning you expect 200 to 300 people. A total of 900 space options are planned, whereby a maximum of 720 people may be accommodated at the same time, reports the tz .

The new center replaces the former facility in the euro industry park, which is closed due to technical defects. In order not to put a strain on the residents, especially with regard to schools and kindergartens, Diakonie will take over social care. This organization has already gained experience in the accommodation of refugees between 2022 and 2024. The district committee has already criticized communication in advance. Local residents sometimes had unsatisfied questions, so an open day in September is promised to make the information transparent. Flyers should also reach the neighbors about one to two weeks before the opening.

Registration and medical examinations

The arrival center will be part of the initial reception facility in Upper Bavaria. Here the asylum seekers are treated in a recognition and receive proof of arrival and a residence permit, which is valid until the asylum procedure is completed. Asylum seekers are distributed in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) based on the country of origin. Families with underage children are to be placed in a follow -up accommodation within a maximum of six months, while asylum seekers traveling alone are generally moved after 18 months.

The basic needs of the asylum seekers are covered according to the information of the Munich Stadt by the Asylum Service Act (AsylbLG). Health care, including acute diseases and preventive measures, is also guaranteed, whereby expectant mothers receive special support.

outlook and challenges

So far, there have been concerns about the announced facility in the area. The residents fear that a high number of refugees could lead to additional loads. It is therefore suggested that information about the processes and facilities are shared transparently in order to counteract fears. An informed neighborhood dialog could help to promote integration and create a positive climate.

The structure of the arrival center is an important step for Munich to be able to face the requirements of current migration. The city thus sets a sign of humanity and support. The coming weeks will show how the opening will work and whether the fears of the residents will come true in practice.
