Gladly celebrates 1000 years: historical anniversary celebrations start!

Gern, a district in the heart of Munich, can look back on a proud 1,000 years of history this year. The place was officially mentioned as “Loco Gerin” in 1025 and has undergone a fascinating development since then. Originally owned by three Augustinian canon monasteries, Gern remained relatively uneventful for over 800 years before numerous developments and changes took place over the last 200 years. These events will be celebrated from September 25, 2025 with a series of events that will focus on the history and cultural diversity of Gern. The tz reports that the celebrations will start with a free lecture about Gern at 7:30 p.m. in the Trafo, Nymphenburger Straße 171a.

Did you know that Gern was taken over by the electors in 1803, with only one farmer purchasing the land? The opening of a public swimming pool on the Nymphenburg-Biedersteiner Canal made the district particularly attractive for bathers. The founding of the “Gerner Brewery” in 1876 and the construction of Munich’s first terraced house settlement, the “Villenkolonie Gern”, by the architect Jakob Heilmann in 1892, marked important milestones in the development of the district. Numerous artists, writers, civil servants and pensioners moved into the over 400 villas and turned Gern into a cultural center. Wikipedia offers closer insights into this thriving community. The country house style villas are now listed buildings and bear witness to the architectural diversity of the time.

Diverse anniversary celebrations

Historical district walks will also take place as part of the anniversary celebrations. The first walk on October 4th is around the villa and artists' colony and starts at 2 p.m. at Nederlinger Straße 35. Participation costs 5 euros. Another exploration of eastern Gern on November 8th starts at Dom-Pedro-Platz at 2 p.m., whereby a participation fee of 5 euros is also charged. In addition, a special issue of the “Neuhauser Workshop News” will be published for 8 euros, which will shed light on the history of Gern. Munich city history notes the relevance of these anniversary measures for local identity.

The Gern district is not only historically important, but also has an eventful past. Before 1933 it was a stronghold of the National Socialists and at the same time many Jewish citizens lived there. This diverse history, from the first documented mention to modern urban development, shows how multifaceted Gern is. The Gern subway station was also artistically designed to reflect the history of the district - a small but significant contribution to the identity that has developed over the centuries.

The hard work and commitment of Gern residents have contributed to the district's popularity today. Whether strolling through the streets, enjoying a barley juice at the brewery or listening to a lecture - Gern has something to offer for everyone. We look forward to the upcoming celebrations and wish the Gern district all the best for its 1000th anniversary!
