A look at the statistics
The number of shopliftings in Germany has been increasing since 2022, according to findings from a current study. Well-known stolen goods include alcoholic beverages, branded clothing and tobacco products, such as Mirror reported. Drugstores are particular hotspots for theft, where small, expensive products are particularly in demand.
According to experts, one reason for the increase is the more frequent use of self-service checkouts, where thefts occur more frequently, sometimes unintentionally due to operating errors. While the amount of damage is constantly increasing, police crime statistics show a decline in reported cases - which suggests that there is a high number of unreported cases. According to EHI, an impressive 98 percent of all thefts go undetected.
These statistics recognize the worrying trend and reinforce the need for increased vigilance in society. Munich citizens are now asked to be vigilant and not be afraid to inform the police wherever suspicious activity is noticed.
