Cyclists in Munich are frustrated: too narrow bike paths and dangerous cars!
In Munich there is sobering mood among the cyclists. At the presentation of the ADFC bicycle climate test 2024 has Eva Mahling ADFC, clearly criticized. The survey has once again shown this year that the situation for cyclists in Bavaria, despite the efforts of recent years, has hardly improved. While 213,000 participants shared their impressions and experiences, the feedback for the cycling infrastructure is anything but gratifying.
A central problem are the too narrow and often parked bike paths, which significantly affect the cyclists' feeling of security. It is alarming that 60 to 70 percent of drivers do not meet the necessary distance when overtaking. Mahling is therefore urgently calling for measures to improve cycle paths and safety in road traffic from the state government. The defective control of incorrectly parked cars on bike paths and the limited bicycle treatment in public transport were also rated with only 4.7 - Bavaria is particularly bad here.
stagnation despite positive aspects
Despite the negative feedback, there are also gratifying aspects to report. Compared to the national average, cleaning the cycle paths, winter service and the rather rare bicycle thefts perform positively. Munich occupies fifth place among cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants with a grade of 3.89, while Erlangen received the best grade of 3.13 under 200,000 inhabitants. However, the results in Munich have been stagnating in Munich for several years.
Another point of criticism is the investments in areas that cyclists consider less relevant. Referish people urgently wanted wide cycle paths and a better opportunity to take bicycle in public transport. After all, the cyclists expect that their voices will be heard, and that not only when the results are presented this spring, but also in the future, when the next Bicycle Klima-Test starts. Again, many feedback is to be expected that should serve the person responsible as a valuable basis.
A look into the future
The survey, which is now being carried out for the eleventh time, should not be exceptions. By the end of November 2024, cyclists can fill their city and thus also shape future planning. Due to the large number of participants, which already made up around 245,000 in the last survey, the relevance of the test for transport policy becomes clear. After all, it is nothing less than one of the greatest surveys to satisfaction from cyclists worldwide. In the coming months, it will be hoped that politics will take the results seriously and to cope with the necessary changes.
The residents of Munich know: cycling should be safe and pleasant! This is not only due to the cyclists themselves, but also due to a strong political will to improve the infrastructure. Now the time is to stand up for changes!
