New traffic turning point: track construction for tram-west tangents started!
The Munich Transport Society (MVG) has initiated an important step with the construction work for the Tram-Westtangente in Laim. Since May 2024, it has been built on Fürstenrieder Straße to move the new tracks for the trams. MVG boss Ingo Wortmann emphasizes the importance of this project and speaks of the numerous advantages for passengers in the west of Munich. From the end of 2025, the first trams are to drive on this route, which is created a direct connection between Pasing, the western part of Laim and Kleinhadern to Laimer Platz.
The construction phase extends between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammersestrasse and is a central link that connects lines 18 and 19. Alex Indra, Head of Large Projects at the Munich Stadtwerke, reports that the tracks have already been laid and the concrete position will begin next week. The first construction phase was started in June 2024 after extensive preparations, which included laying supply lines.
construction work and traffic restrictions
However, the construction work also has some inconvenience. The performance of Fürstenrieder Straße is reduced by about 70 percent, which largely loses its function as a north-south axis in the west of Munich. Road users are asked to bypass the road extensively, since only one lane is usually available per direction of travel. There are therefore often dust formations in the past few weeks.
The adjacent road connections, such as Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Gotthardstraße, are also particularly hard hit. The Hogenberg underpass is closed and parking bays are partially eliminated. The construction fields partly close close to the residential buildings, which also contains the residents. The access to Sahrstraße is expected to be not possible until the end of June.
additional infrastructure projects
But the focus is not only on track construction. As part of the construction work, the renovation or construction of the main water pipe 5 has been taking place since September 2024. This connection work between the new main water pipe at Laimer Platz underground station and the existing management should continue until autumn 2026. At the same time, further restrictions on the Laim motorway connection are planned, which have been in force since October 2024.
With the plans for the tram-West tangent and the associated infrastructure improvements, the city of Munich and the MVG meet the growing requirements of the transport infrastructure. Even if there are inconvenience during the construction phases, the long -term advantages for mobility in Munich are not to be misunderstood. Frey passengers can therefore look forward to improved accessibility and a modern tram connection.
