New transport turning point: track construction for tram west tangent started!
The Munich Transport Company (MVG) has taken an important step with the construction work for the tram west tangent in Laim. Construction has been going on on Fürstenrieder Straße since May 2024 to lay the new tracks for the trams. MVG boss Ingo Wortmann emphasizes the importance of this project and speaks of the numerous advantages for passengers in the west of Munich. The first trams are scheduled to run on this route from the end of 2025, creating a direct connection between Pasing, the western part of Laim and Kleinhadern to Laimer Platz.
The construction phase extends between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße and is a central link that connects lines 18 and 19. Alex Indra, head of large-scale projects at Stadtwerke München, reports that some of the tracks have already been laid and concreting will begin next week. The first construction phase started in June 2024 after extensive preparations, which included, among other things, laying supply lines.
Construction work and traffic restrictions
However, the construction work also brings with it some inconveniences. The performance of Fürstenrieder Straße has been reduced by around 70 percent, meaning that it largely loses its function as a north-south axis in the west of Munich. Road users are asked to avoid the road as much as possible, as there is usually only one lane available in each direction. As a result, there have been frequent traffic jams in recent weeks.
The adjacent road connections, such as Agnes-Bernauer-Strasse and Gotthardstrasse, were particularly hard hit. The Hogenberg underpass is closed and some parking bays are no longer available. The construction sites are sometimes moving close to the residential buildings, which puts additional strain on the residents. Access to Saherrstrasse will probably not be possible until the end of June.
Additional infrastructure projects
But the focus is not just on track construction. As part of the construction work, the renovation or new construction of the main water pipe 5 has been taking place since September 2024. This connection work between the new main water pipe at Laimer Platz subway station and the existing pipe is scheduled to last until autumn 2026. At the same time, further restrictions are planned around the Laim motorway junction, which have been in force since October 2024.
With the plans for the tram west tangent and the associated infrastructure improvements, the city of Munich and the MVG are meeting the growing demands of the transport infrastructure. Even if there are inconveniences during the construction phase, the long-term benefits for mobility in Munich cannot be ignored. Committed passengers can look forward to improved accessibility and a modern tram connection.
