New warning signs in Munich: Cyclists going astray are in danger!
There are currently eye-catching new warning signs on the cycle paths in Munich, which urgently warn cyclists about the risk of accidents for those who ride on the wrong side. The bright signs show two bicycles almost colliding and indicate that cyclists are on the wrong side of the road. These warning signs can be seen primarily in the west of Munich, including at Westkreuz and in Pasing. However, the mobility department of the city of Munich has made it clear that it is not the author of these shocking pictograms. As tz reports, there is already an official traffic sign that prohibits cyclists from riding on the wrong cycle lane.
Cyclists who do not follow traffic regulations risk a fine of 20 euros. The ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrradclub) also does not know who the authors of these warning signs are, but had already spotted similar pictograms on Landshuter Allee on May 7th. This initiative could be a call for better mindfulness in city traffic.
Pop-up bike paths on the rise
In parallel to the warning signs, the Munich city council is planning to create several temporary cycle paths. This initiative is intended to respond to the increased bicycle traffic during the Corona pandemic, which has increased by up to 25%. The ADFC Munich supports the projects of the SPD/Volt and the Greens/Rosa-List. But it is also clearly required that, in addition to temporary solutions, permanent measures are particularly necessary.
On May 20th, the ADFC demonstrated the need for safe cycle paths with a pop-up cycle path on Zweibrückenstrasse. These temporary cycle paths will be set up on Rosenheimer Straße, Zweibrückenstraße, Elisenstraße, Gabelsbergerstraße and Theresienstraße, among others. These sections are considered dangerous and have long been criticized by the ADFC. Andreas Groh, the first chairman of the ADFC Munich, thanks the city council groups and the city administration for the initiative and calls for safe, wide and continuous cycle paths for safe driving conditions.
A green wave for cycling
The topic of sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important. Switching to bicycles is becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly alternative to cars. According to the Mobility Forum, the expansion of cycling traffic is increasing rapidly. The growing awareness of environmentally friendly means of transport and the spread of e-bikes and (e-)cargo bikes are contributing to the doubling of cycling traffic.
The project, which is being carried out by the Institute for Transport Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), aims to monitor cycling-friendly developments and to transparently present the positive environmental effects of cycling. Funding from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport supports these projects and focuses on sustainability and environmental protection.
