New warning signs in Munich: Cyclists in danger!

In Munich, striking new warning signs are currently on the bike paths, the cyclists urgently indicate the risk of accidents for those who drive on the wrong side. The bright signs show two almost colliding bicycles and point out that cyclists move on the wrong side of the road. These warning signs can be seen especially in the west of Munich, including at the Westkreuz and Pasing. However, the city of Munich's mobility department has made it clear that it is not the author of these shocking pictograms. As reports the tz, there is already an official traffic sign that prohibits cycling for cyclists.

cyclists who do not adhere to the traffic regulations risk a fine of 20 euros. The ADFC (General German Bicycle Club) also does not know who is the author of these warning signs, but have already seen similar pictograms on May 7 at Landshuter Allee. This initative could be a call for better mindfulness in city traffic.

pop-up cycle paths on the advance

In parallel to the warning signs, the city council of Munich is planning to create several temporary cycle paths. This initiative is intended to respond to increased bicycle traffic during Corona pandemic, which has increased by up to 25%. The [ADFC Munich] (https://muenchen.adfc.de/pressemitteigteilung/adfc-muenchen-begruesst-pop-up-up-cycle paths) supports the projects of the SPD/volt and green/pink list. But it is also clearly demanded that in addition to the temporary solutions, permanent measures are necessary.

On May 20, the ADFC demonstrated the need for safe bike paths with a pop-up cycle path on Zweibrückenstraße. These temporary cycle paths are set up on Rosenheimer Straße, Zweibrückenstraße, Elisenstraße, Gabelsbergerstraße and Theresienstrasse. These sections are considered dangerous and have long been objected to by the ADFC. Andreas Groh, the 1st chairman of the ADFC Munich, thanks the city council groups and the city administration for the initiative and demands safe, width and consistent cycle paths for safe driving conditions.

a green wave for cycling

The topic of sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important. The switch to the bike is becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly alternative to car. According to the mobility forum, the expansion of bicycle traffic increases rapidly. The growing awareness of environmentally friendly transport and the spread of e-bikes as well as (e-) cargo bikes contribute to the doubling of traffic in bicycle traffic.

The project, which is carried out by the Institute for Transport Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), aims to observe the cycling-friendly development and transparently present the positive environmental effects of bicycle use. Funding of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport supports these projects and focus on sustainability and environmental protection.
