Major S-Bahn closure in Munich: patience required until June 18th!

The weekend in Munich will be dedicated to the commissioning of the new electronic signal box at the Ostbahnhof. Starting this Saturday, June 7, 2025, the entire S-Bahn track infrastructure around Ostbahnhof will be shut down for a week. This measure is part of an extensive renovation that is intended to ensure the stability and efficiency of S-Bahn traffic in the Bavarian capital. Loud BR The closure will last until Friday 13 June 2025 and alternative transport is recommended.

Deutsche Bahn has defined the signal box as a key project for the second main route and the entire S-Bahn network stability. The commissioning itself took place through a complex process that already had a major impact on the timetable in the run-up to the Whitsun holidays. The responsible area was divided into three phases. These begin with the nightly changeover on June 6th and only end on June 18th, when the reduced S-Bahn traffic is gradually started up again German railway reported.

Timetables and alternative transport

During phase 2, which lasts from June 7th to 13th, 2025, the tracks in the area of the new signal box will be completely at a standstill. Only the S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 still run on a shortened section between Pasing and Isartor. All other lines end at different points: the S6 and S8 in Pasing, the S4 at Heimeranplatz and the S1 at the main station. Passengers are dependent on replacement buses that commute between Isartor and Ostbahnhof every 5 minutes southdeutsche.de.

Unfortunately, many passengers report insufficient information about the innovations and difficulties when switching to the rail replacement buses. The system requires that the service employees at the stops must be actively addressed. To make the changeover easier for passengers, Deutsche Bahn provides information steles at train stations. There are also QR codes for quick orientation and information about announcements and passenger television.

Criticism and challenges

The changeover was not without challenges: the construction of the new signal box took four years, with delays that were partly due to the complex technical implementation. Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter was critical of these delays, while Prime Minister Markus Söder supported the construction of a new signal box. The old signal box, which is 55 years old, is known for its susceptibility to failure and will remain in operation for long-distance railway tracks for the time being.

The Nations League final is also expected in the football arena this weekend, which will cause an increase in passenger numbers. It is therefore advisable to use the subway and tram as alternative means of transport to avoid traffic jams and queues. Deutsche Bahn recommends using online connection information and timetable apps to find the fastest connections and plan accordingly.

The full return to regular S-Bahn operations is scheduled for June 19th. Until then, the people of Munich and their visitors will have to be patient and prepare well for the upcoming changes.
