More speed 30 for Munich's pedestrians and cyclists: security boost!

Untergiesing, Deutschland - Munich faces a fundamental change when it comes to traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The Sachsenstrasse in Untergiesing is currently being redesigned to take into account the increased pedestrian and bike traffic around the Schyrenbad and the rose garden. So far, there was only a Tempo 30 zone in the street up to the corner to Claude-Lorraine-Straße. But thanks to a novella of the road traffic regulations (StVO), which came into force in October 2024, there are now new opportunities for more safety in road traffic. The novella enables a simpler arrangement of Tempo 30 zones, which are particularly concentrated in schools, playgrounds and disabled facilities, such as the evening newspaper reported.

Since April 2025, the new administrative regulations have applied that lead municipalities on how to implement these regulations. The city of Munich has already had a new Tempo 30 sign on Sachsenstrasse, which updates the previous zone. Tempo 30 now applies both before and after the new section. It is particularly gratifying that the city can now also make orders where there are at most 500 meters between two Tempo 30 areas. Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) emphasizes that these measures are of great importance. It demands a generous interpretation by the mobility presentation so that many of the possible improvements can actually be implemented. However, there is a drop of bitterness: court proceedings could slow down the implementation of the new possibilities, according to the [tz] (https://www.tz.de/muenchen/stadt/hallo-muenchen/muenchen-tempo 30-fussgaengerueberwege-through- Stvo-Novelle-stadt-stadt-stadt-stadt

new opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists

The current initiatives are not only a reaction to the needs of citizens, but also a step towards sustainable mobility. As part of the StVO amendment, measures for pedestrian crossings are simplified in order to further increase traffic safety. The city now has the option of identifying potential locations for Tempo 30 measures that have so far been rejected. The municipalities can apply for orders to the authority without having to present a proven lack of parking space, which improves the chances of positive changes.

In the future,

In the future, orders for playgrounds and disabled facilities can also be made, which offers special protection for the vulnerable road users. The new road traffic regulations focus on climate protection, health and a safe urban development, which will benefit the current StVO in many areas. According to the [ADFC] (https://www.adfc.de/dossier/die-stvo-2024-bobenungen-Fuer-Bus-and-Fussver traffic), the measures must be based on reasonable forecasts with regard to traffic safety and the environment, which should take very serious people in Munich.

A look into the future

The city administration plans to start the implementation of certain measures as early as autumn 2025; Some instructions could even be realized earlier. These developments are a sign that the city wants to benefit from the new STVO possibilities in terms of traffic safety. Although new regulations also have challenges, the will is noticeable to change. The Munich citizens can therefore be excited to see what the coming months will bring when it comes to improving the traffic conditions and making the city safer.
