Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz: Munich proudly honors its football star!
Munich has responded to the death of one of the greatest footballers in German history by renaming streets. On January 7, 2024, the legendary Franz Beckenbauer, considered the “emperor” and “lighting figure” of football, died at the age of 78. The city of Munich is honoring his legacy by naming a square after him - Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz, very close to the Allianz Arena, where FC Bayern hunt for goals. This decision was made by the city immediately after the sad event and contributes to honoring a man who significantly shaped Germany's football history through tireless commitment and strategic skill.
The CEO of FC Bayern, Jan-Christian Dreesen, took part in the inauguration of the square and warmly thanked the city of Munich for the naming, which is not only a tribute to Beckenbauer, but also to his outstanding achievements at FC Bayern. Josef Fischer, former foreign minister, was apt when he described Beckenbauer as "the nation's lucky child" - an apt description for a person who won three World Cups for Germany: once as a player in 1974, as team manager in 1990 and, last but not least, at the home World Cup in 2006, which is remembered as solid and sociable.
New streets and their namesake
The city of Munich has adhered to fixed principles when naming streets. In 2024, it wasn't just Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz that was introduced. A total of seven new names were made. Among the new roads are:
- Am Olympiacampus (Milbertshofen-Am Hart): Ein Verweis auf die Nähe zum Olympiagelände.
- Barbara-Stamm-Straße (Schwabing-Freimann): Nach der Politikerin Barbara Stamm, die am 29. Oktober 1944 geboren und am 5. Oktober 2022 verstorben ist.
- Eisenbahnerweg (Berg am Laim): Eine Hommage an die Geschichte der Eisenbahn in diesem Stadtteil.
- Elisabeth-Kitzinger-Straße (Schwabing-Freimann): Gewidmet der Wohlfahrtspflegerin, geboren am 2. Januar 1881 und gestorben am 2. Juli 1966.
- Lion-Feuchtwanger-Platz (Altstadt-Lehel): Nach dem berühmten Schriftsteller, geboren am 7. Juli 1884 und verstorben am 21. Dezember 1958.
- Winfried-Zehetmeier-Straße (Schwabing-Freimann): Nach dem Politiker und Pädagogen, geboren am 30. Mai 1933 und gestorben am 26. Juni 2019.
The principles of street names in Munich are clearly defined: living people are not honored, there is no risk of confusion with existing names, and new names should be easy to understand. All of these rules help preserve the city's identity and ensure that streets have a clear connection to their names.
With the inauguration of Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz, the city of Munich not only shows respect for one of the greatest sports legends, but also shows how deeply rooted football is in the culture of this city. One would assume that Beckenbauer's name continues to provide proud memories and lively discussions in the hearts of his fans.
