Mourning for Johann Diethart: Fire chief dies at the age of 55

There is sadness in the community of Wald am Schoberpass: Chief Fire Officer Johann Diethart died on October 11, 2025 at the age of 56 after a short, serious illness. Diethart has been a member of the volunteer fire department since May 1, 1995 and held the position of commander from 2004 to 2022. Christopher Rainer, Diethart's successor, describes the loss as an "enormous catastrophe" for his fellow firefighters and emphasizes its lasting impact on the community's fire department. “Johann had a great deal of specialist knowledge and put his heart and soul into the work,” said Rainer in an initial statement.

A black flag has been raised at the armory to mark the mourning and loss. Mayor Marc Landl expressed his sympathy and emphasized Diethart's willingness to take responsibility, who always paid attention to the fire department's financial concerns. His handshake quality and careful actions were seen by many as exemplary.

Diverse commitment and responsibility

Diethart showed a great passion for firefighting early on. He underwent numerous training courses and took on a variety of responsibilities, including positions as equipment supervisor, machine foreman and trainer. From 2009 to 2013 he was a section fire brigade commander and from 2013 to 2023 he was a deputy area fire brigade commander. Since 2023 he has led the Leoben area fire brigade association as area fire brigade commander. His technical understanding and empathy made him a reliable contact for many.

Alexander Siegmund, who had been Diethart's deputy since 2022, described the shock of the sudden loss and highlighted Diethart's diplomacy and accessibility. A popular and helpful person, he was always ready to help others. He not only leaves a hole in the fire department, but also in the hearts of his family members, especially his wife Christa and his son Michael.

appreciation of his achievements

His services were also recognized by state fire brigade commander LBD Reinhard Leichtfried, who described Diethart as a community personality. Many awards he has received throughout his career underline his commitment to the fire service, most recently the FLA in Gold. The numerous expressions of grief make it clear how much Diethart was valued and how deeply his loss affects the firefighter family.

Johann Diethart will be remembered as an example of extraordinary volunteer commitment in the fire department. The club has not only lost a competent leader, but also a friend. In times of change, it becomes clear once again how important voluntary commitment is in our communities and how personalities like Diethart play a key role in social life. Condolences go out to his family and friends during these difficult times.
