Chaos after Champions League celebration: Königsplatz smothered in garbage!

On June 2, 2025, there will be talk in Munich about the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan - to be precise, about the side effects of the public viewing at Königsplatz. With around 20,000 fans attending the game and no significant escalation, the mood could be described as peaceful. Nevertheless, the debriefing looks anything but brilliant.

Florian Knauß, head of the Glyptothek, expresses his horror at the remains left by the celebrants. The condition of Königsplatz on Monday morning was simply “devastating”. “In 24 years I have not experienced so much dirt and damage,” complains Knauß, describing the picture full of plastic and paper bags, crumpled banners and splinters of glass. Graffiti with striking content, such as numbers, hearts and the saying “Fight because it's worth living,” was also found on the antique collections. It remains to be seen whether conditions will improve at future events, such as the Topless Festival or the IAA.( tz.de )

View of the fan zones

The Champions League final, which was played in the Allianz Arena on May 31, 2025, offered some attractive events for the fans in advance. The Champions Festival took place in the Olympic Park from May 29th to June 1st, with concerts and hands-on activities. The highlight was the public viewing on Saturday evening, which offered space for up to 23,000 people.( swp.de )

The official fan zones were at Odeonsplatz for Inter Milan supporters and at Königsplatz for PSG fans, where food, drink and entertainment gathered. While there were gestures of gathering in many places, some restaurants in the city center such as the Hofbräuhaus remained without public football broadcasts. The Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association still expects an increase in sales of around 30%, which is due to the estimated 90,000 overnight stays.

Safety precautions and traffic information

Of course, for an event of this size, the security precautions have to be right. The police classified the game as a high-risk game and deployed 2,000 emergency services. These were supported by officials from France and Italy who were familiar with the scene in order to identify possible problems at an early stage. Even if there was no concrete evidence of violence, increased controls and mobile barriers were necessary to keep the situation under control.( sueddeutsche.de )

The Munich Transport Company (MVG) recommended arriving early and made more subway services available from 1 p.m. to avoid possible traffic jams. The stops near the events are not accessible during the event. The police also advised not to drive into the city center by car.

Although the public viewing was a highlight for fans, the question remains as to how the city of Munich can deal with the aftermath of such major events in order to ensure both fun and cleanliness.
