Bierkiste closes: farewell party on October 31st in Munich!
It's a bittersweet day for Munich beer lovers. On October 31, 2025, the well-known “Bierkiste” at Zenettistraße 43 will celebrate its last big farewell party. From 3 p.m. four bands will be on stage and offer visitors an entertaining farewell program. Admission is free, but guests' hearts will certainly feel heavier when they think back to the cozy hours in the popular mix of drinks market and pub.
The beer crate, which opened five years ago, quickly made a name for itself. Chef Tilman Ludwig-Munzig, a Munich native and trained master brewer, has been running the business since the beginning. With his passion for specialty beers, including his own creations “Tilmans Beers”, he has created a relaxed atmosphere that always attracts guests. Even if the beer crate now has to close, the door is open to new possibilities: Ludwig-Munzig is already looking for a new location with an area of at least 100 square meters and a bar garden where he can continue his concept. Tips are welcome at durst@bierkiste-muenchen.de.
Development of beer culture in Munich
Munich is not only known for its beautiful squares, but also for its traditional beer culture. The city began to establish itself as a beer metropolis as early as the 16th century, when Duke Wilhelm V founded the Hofbräuhaus. The oldest still existing brewery in the world, the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, shows how deep the roots of beer production are here and dates back to the year 1040. The famous “Bavarian Purity Law”, which was introduced in 1516, has shaped beer production to this day.
The area around Munich offers optimal conditions for brewing: fertile soil for brewing barley and rich hop production, which enjoys a good reputation, particularly in the Hallertau region. The drinking water that comes from the headwaters of the Mangfall Mountains is considered to be the purest in Germany, and is another reason why Munich's beers are so valued. In addition, a lively craft beer scene has been established in recent years that respects the traditional purity law, but also integrates new and exciting ingredients and brewing techniques. An exploration of beer culture in Munich wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum, which gives guests insights into the fascinating history of this special culture.
While the beer crate now closes a chapter, the love for beer remains alive in Munich. The farewell party is not only a reason to celebrate, but also an opportunity to relive the memories of one of the coziest places in the city, which has become home to many beer enthusiasts in recent years.
