Chaos at Munich Airport: Condor flight has to take off because of 10 seconds!
The passengers of Condor flight DE 1513 from Palma de Mallorca to Munich on June 2, 2025 experienced unexpected chaos. Instead of taking off at 8:30 p.m. as planned, the plane only took off at 10:52 p.m., almost two hours late. The delayed departure was due to delays in the previous flight, as [RTL](https://www.rtl.de/news/condor- Flugzeug-von-mallorca-darf-nicht-landen-wegen-zwei-sekunden-verspaetung-id4394683.html) reported.
The arrival in Munich, which was originally planned for 10:40 p.m., ultimately did not take place until June 3rd at 8:00 a.m. The situation became even more unpleasant for the passengers who had already made their way home. Shortly before the planned landing after midnight, the pilot did not receive permission to land because he was ten seconds late with his approach. That meant he had to get started.
Night flight ban in Munich
The basis for this decision lies in the strict ban on night flights, which applies during core hours from midnight to 5 a.m. Only special exceptions, such as emergency and relief flights, would be allowed during this time, while permission to land could only be granted until 12:30 a.m., which was disregarded in this case. The Merkur reports that the pilot said he had never experienced anything like this in his entire career.
After the failed landing attempt, the plane was diverted to Frankfurt-Hahn, where the passengers landed at 1:14 a.m. They then had to be transported 118 kilometers by bus to their actual destination, Munich Airport. These detours meant that the entire trip took around twelve hours longer than planned.
Excuses and consequences
Condor has already apologized to the affected travelers for the inconvenience. The botched flight shows once again how important clear regulations are in aviation. During the off-peak hours, only specific flight movements are permitted in order to minimize noise for residents. Exceptions are possible during the night, but approval lies with the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Building and Transport.
However, the question remains whether it would make sense to adapt the regulations in the event of delays in order to accommodate passengers in such exceptional situations. The discussion about night flight bans and their flexibility will therefore continue in the future.
