Chaos in Munich's rail traffic: violence and breakdowns shock travelers!
In the last few days, Munich has experienced several violent incidents and breakdowns in rail traffic. At the weekend there was a threatening incident in the heart of the city, at the main train station: a 66-year-old man threatened a 19-year-old with a scalpel and made bizarre threats. Such incidents contribute to the overall sense of security in society, which is already tense in many places in Germany. Loud Statista Violent crimes account for less than four percent of crimes recorded by the police, which nevertheless leads to a very high perception of danger.
But that wasn't the only shocking incident: in Dorfen, the police had to intervene when a 67-year-old driver resisted and tried to bite an officer. Such aggression seems to be increasing in the current social situation. The Tixio Journal highlights that further acts of violence such as domestic violence at the main train station and a fight at Giesing train station illustrate the worrying situation.
Breakdowns in rail transport
An incident was particularly bizarre on Saturday evening when a regional train in Geltendorf broke down in front of the main station because of a defective locomotive. The situation escalated when, after about 50 minutes, the train doors suddenly opened, causing passengers to get off in the middle of the tracks. This led to a dangerous situation that prompted the federal police to close the route. According to a spokeswoman for the Federal Police, the doors should not have simply opened, which entails a comprehensive investigation to clarify the incidents. Passengers, including around 250 football fans, had to be taken from the Hackerbrücke S-Bahn station to the main train station again as train connections were interrupted as a result, which was particularly unpleasant during Oktoberfest.
A total of 63 passengers were evacuated when the train got caught in a switched-off overhead line, which makes the investigation results all the more important. It remains to be clarified whether human error played a role. How BR24 reported, in these cases it is currently being examined how these breakdowns could have occurred.
A worrying trend
The increase in violent crime observed since 2021 adds to the worrying situation in Munich. According to the Statista registered violent crimes will be around 217,000 in 2024, which is the highest number since 2007. There are many reasons for this: economic uncertainties, social pressures and psycho-social problems are adding fuel to the fire. In particular, the willingness to use violence is perceived as an increasing problem by a large part of the population.
The Federal Police will continue to closely monitor all incidents and investigate in order to create a safer environment for the people of Munich. At a time when security is a major issue, it remains to be seen how the situation in the city will develop.
