Stimulus gas attack in Munich school: 17 injured, police investigated!

Franz-Nißl-Straße, 80997 München, Deutschland - A disturbing incident recently occurred at a Munich school when several young people were injured by irritant gas. The incident occurred on Thursday at lunchtime on Franz-Nißl-Straße in the Allach district. Here the emergency services received the first indication of a possible gas leak at 12:30 p.m. after students complained about eye irritation and breathing difficulties. In the shortest possible time, a large contingent of the fire brigade and emergency services started and went to school to control the situation, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

A total of 17 people, including both students and members of the school staff, were injured. Fortunately, the numbers are not even more dramatic; Eight of the injured had to be treated more heavily and were brought to Munich clinics. The police informed the concerned parents about the whereabouts of their children and evacuated the part of the building affected. Despite the intensive reviews of the premises, however, no dangerous substance could be determined, which could alleviate the worries of those present.

Investigations and causes

The criminal police have now started the investigation into assault. Initial findings indicate that the incident does not indicate a gas exit or chemical accident, but that really stimulus gas was sprayed in the building. This evokes memories of previous incidents, including a similar attack in a language institute in April, in which 17 people were also slightly injured. Another example from the past is the irritant gas attack at the Willy Brandt comprehensive school in December, in which 39 people were affected. The police are now investigating unknown people, while the security situation in schools remains an important topic.

In this context, the relevance of the prevention measures in the school area can also be seen. According to the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV), there were over 53,000 pupil accidents at general education schools in 2022, although bullying and mental violence are not even taken into account. More and more school management report insults and threats to teachers. It is therefore crucial that schools develop prevention strategies to ensure a safe environment. Dr. Stefan Hussy, General Manager of DGUV, emphasizes the need for such programs.

preparation for the didacta

With regard to the upcoming didacta educational fair in Cologne, which takes place in February 2024, the issue of violence prevention and promoting a positive school climate will play a central role. Here various lectures are offered that deal with effective measures to prevent violence and to strengthen mental health of students. For example, Mindmatter's prevention program is presented, which aims to establish a caring school culture.

The current events in Munich illustrate the urgency of such measures and the need to design schools as safe places. The recent incident on Thursday should serve as a wake -up call for everyone involved.

Süddeutsche Zeitung and evening newspaper continue to report on the status of the investigation and possible consequences for the security situation in Munich. The dguv also plans to strengthen prevention in schools, which could be a step in the right direction.
