Memories of Karl Leisner
Another important aspect of Klever's history is the monument in honor of Karl Leisner, which is also located in the city. Leisner was born on February 28, 1915 in Rees and died on August 12, 1945 in Planegg. He grew up at Flandrisch Straße 11 and was beatified in the Dachau concentration camp on December 17, 1944. His beatification later took place on June 23, 1996. An impressive monument, designed by sculptor Bert Gerresheim and his assistant Francisco Ces Hernandez, shows Leisner in his priestly robes.
The memorial consists of a multi-part stele, a bust and symbols of his sufferings, including his prisoner numbers in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the Dachau concentration camp, which are impressively engraved on the stele. Religious symbols depicting the torments of Jesus can also be found in front of the stele. This monument is not only a homage to Leisner, but also a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and the power of faith.
A place of remembrance
The forest cemetery and the monument to Karl Leisner are part of an extensive cultural and historical infrastructure in Kleve. The city has a lot to offer in terms of monuments and historical sites that encourage visitors to rediscover the past. So anyone who is in Kleve at this time and has a good knack for historical exploration should definitely not miss the upcoming guided tours.
The opportunity to deal with Kleve's history and also take a look at the important grave sites is very much appreciated by the organizers and makes Kleve an interesting place for locals and tourists.
