Lightning strike shakes Trudering: Garden in flames and damage!

In Trudering, a district of Munich, a spectacular lightning strike caused a stir. Daniel Schulz, a local resident, reported the incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, July 2nd, shortly before 8 p.m. Despite a bright blue sky, there was a lot of lightning.

The lightning struck with millions of volts between two trees in Schulz's garden and caused considerable damage. Shattered concrete slabs and small fires on roots and hedges were the result of the powerful impact. “There was a loud bang and then the bright light came,” said neighbors who witnessed the incident.

Damage and consequences

The fire department was immediately alerted and fire investigators from the criminal police are now examining the damage. The impact on electronic devices in the neighborhood is particularly tragic: televisions, computers and telephones were damaged by the lightning strike. Daniel Schulz and his family even had to go without the Internet for three days, but fortunately were uninjured.

Munich's lightning danger

The high lightning activity in Bavaria is hardly surprising. In 2024, the Free State recorded 56,664 lightning strikes, around a quarter of all strikes registered in Germany. At the top of the list of places with the most lightning is Rosenheim, the “lightning capital” with an incredible 2.98 lightning strikes per square kilometer. Munich itself has a lightning density of 1.16 lightning strikes per square meter, making it the most lightning-rich city in Germany - a title that city residents are aware of.

Compared to Germany as a whole, the number of lightning strikes is increasing. A total of 209,619 lightning strikes struck in 2024, an increase of eight percent compared to the previous year, according to the daily news informed.
Interestingly, although the lightning density in Hamburg was the highest among the federal states, the total number remains relatively low at 702 lightning strikes. The highest lightning densities in Bavaria can be found in the Miesbach district, while Bayreuth has the lowest value with only 0.11 lightning strikes per square kilometer.

Causes and outlook

The reasons for the high lightning activity in Bavaria are diverse, with the proximity to the Alps playing a crucial role. Lightning often occurs in warm and humid weather, exactly when thunderstorms are brewing. Munich residents should be particularly careful in summer, when thunderstorms become more frequent.

Lightning in the garden is definitely not something to be trifled with, and the incident in Trudering shows once again how powerful nature can be. It remains to be hoped that residents' technology will be better protected in the future and such incidents will be avoided.

The lightning statistics off Statista clearly underlines the trends; the numbers may be recorded even more precisely in the future. As we all know, the weather is not something to be trifled with, and the people of Munich certainly felt it.
