Munich plans to upgrade Arnulfpark: residents demand co-determination!

The city of Munich is planning a comprehensive upgrade of Arnulfpark with the aim of making the green and leisure area sustainable. A new public toilet facility on Erika-Mann-Straße is expected to go into operation in July 2025. These measures follow the results of a feasibility study that has long been at the heart of area residents. The applications for the redesign come from the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg and Maxvorstadt district committees, which means that the needs of local residents should be specifically incorporated into the planning. Hello Munich highlights the importance of these inclusions, especially through the commitment of Sabine Ullrich, who is active in the Arnulfpark neighborhood club.

For over ten years, the district has said goodbye to the idea of a firmly established children's, youth and neighborhood meeting place. The draft budget for the meeting place on Erika-Mann-Straße amounts to a respectable 7.39 million euros. The approval and clarification of the financing are pending; Nevertheless, planning is already in full swing. It is unclear whether resident workshops will be part of the participation process. However, citizen participation is seen as an essential part of the project in order to increase user interest and acceptance of the new green space.

Focus on green spaces and biodiversity

The aim of the transformation is not only to adapt to climate change, but also to promote biodiversity. The design concept envisages the creation of a bright and light-flooded park that includes elements such as tree plantings and flowering meadows. Realgrün landscape architects describes the use of modern materials such as light beige asphalt and fall protection surfaces as well as white concrete installations, which are intended to significantly shape the aesthetics of the park. With 150 newly planted trees and over 18,500 square meters of newly laid grass carpet, the park will not only be a place for relaxation, but also an example of sustainable urban redevelopment.

Another focus is on creating two large play and adventure areas that are appealing to both children and young people as well as the entire neighborhood. These measures are part of the new urban development area Arnulfpark, which is characterized by a central location and at the same time should contribute to increasing the quality of life in the area.

A tool for future urban planning

In order to better take the needs of city residents into account, a planned online tool is being developed to map the effects of urban green spaces. This project aims to generate arguments for the preservation and expansion of urban green spaces and to further promote citizen participation. The Federal Environment Agency shows how important it is that planning takes into account not only the production costs, but also the maintenance costs and the needs of the population. Measures to permanently establish urban green spaces are the focus of efforts to counteract climate change.

The Arnulfpark shows a good example of how urban development can be shaped through citizen participation and environmentally conscious planning. The upcoming changes could represent a real benefit for residents of the surrounding districts while contributing to biodiversity in the city.
