Deutsche Bahn will start operating a new signal box at Ostbahnhof on June 6, 2025, which will result in drastic changes to S-Bahn traffic.

S-Bahn Munich: Whitsun holidays bring massive traffic chaos!
During the Whitsun holidays, S-Bahn traffic in Munich faces major challenges. From June 7th, Deutsche Bahn will put a new electronic signal box into operation at Munich's Ostbahnhof. This not only has an impact on timetables, but also on the mobility of commuters and travelers in the region. According to the Evening newspaper The closure of the main route begins on the night of June 6th to 7th and lasts until June 18th.
The measure serves the urgently needed digitization and modernization of the control and security technology. The work will be structured in three phases, with the first phase starting on the night of June 6th at 10:30 p.m. The main route and the area around the Ostbahnhof will be closed until June 7th at 5 a.m. and replacement buses will offer a shuttle service. The S-Bahn does not run between Pasing and Riem, Giesing, Trudering and Johanneskirchen during this time.
Phase of changes and bus replacement service
In the second phase, which runs from June 7th to 13th, the tracks in the area of the new signal box will not be accessible. Integrated into this are lines S1, S2 and S3, which are severely affected by these closures. However, passengers can use the replacement service between Isartor and Ostbahnhof, which runs every five minutes. The usual frequency of the S-Bahn will be greatly reduced during this time. For example, the S1 only runs to the airport every 20 minutes, which can lead to high occupancy, especially during the Nations League football final on June 8th German railway communicates.
The third phase from June 13th to 18th is crucial for the commissioning of the new signal box, during which operations will continue to be monitored. Even then, S-Bahn traffic will remain restricted as lines S1 and S5 will not run on the main route. From June 19th, traffic should finally run normally again after a step-by-step review process has been completed, as recommended by the South German newspaper is reported.
Limitations and important notes
These comprehensive changes represent a major logistical challenge. The Munich S-Bahn points out that many lines are ending prematurely and the usual trains are being canceled completely. Information steles will be set up at the train stations to inform passengers about the current status. There are also QR codes and employees on site to answer questions.
The complexity of the project has been marked by several delays in recent years, which Deutsche Bahn described internally as challenging. But the new electronic signal box, which replaces relay technology that is over 55 years old, has the potential to make S-Bahn traffic more efficient and adapt it to modern requirements.
Passengers are asked to plan their journeys carefully and, if necessary, consider alternative means of transport such as subways or regional trains to avoid any inconvenience during the construction work.
